Working at GreenSaver, Shaiq Khan has taken one step closer to his dream of working in home construction. After moving to Canada in 2001, Shaiq was inspired by Home and Garden Television. “I was new in Canada and figuring out what career I’d like to pursue. I watched Holmes on Holmes every day. It was more informative then other programs and involved more of the practical. I thought, you know what, maybe that’s what I want to do, and it turned out to be,” he said. He started working with a couple contractors including one that he assisted with building a house from scratch. Soon after, he decided to go to Mohawk College for the Renovation Technician Diploma. “I realized that if I have a degree and professional knowledge, I’d have more opportunities,” he said. He applied at lots of places when he finished school and GreenSaver hired him. Shaiq has been working at GreenSaver for 5 years. He started as Crew Chief, where he lead a crew and made sure jobs were completed each day. He was then promoted to Weatherization Supervisor. Some of his tasks include checking work orders for special instructions, making sure we have materials, coordinating with the sales team and assigning jobs to the crews. Shaiq’s favourite part of working at GreenSaver is the working environment. “It’s not very stressful because the people I work with are easy going,” he said. Outside of construction and home renovation, Shaiq loves to spend time with his wife and 3 kids. “In the summer we go to parks, lakes and do other outdoor activities,” he said. To save energy the Khan family tries hard to recycle, keeps lights off if not in use, and makes use of their dimmer switches. The Toronto Sun says upgrading to a high efficiency furnace can reduce your carbon footprint, help you save money and raise your home's value. They interviewed Dustin McDonald from Martino HVAC who is suggesting that we make sure our furnaces are the right AFUE rating, and size. “Older furnaces may have an AFUE rating of around 60 percent, meaning 40 percent of your home’s output is not being used to heat your home and your furnace needs to work extra hard to keep your home comfortable,” says McDonald. This week we are profiling our very own Senior Program Coordinator, humanitarian and Yogi, Stephen Lachan. While studying psychology at Brock University, he worked at a 24-hr crisis line, leading him to a career helping struggling individuals. Stephen started at GreenSaver as a Client Support Specialist, helping limited-income clients participate in the Home Assistance Program, which provides free energy saving upgrades to try to help lower hydro bills. “I know that being engaged in the work I do has always been important to me, feeling like the work I do is making some sort of difference, and for me, I see work as another avenue through which we can derive meaning and connection, in this increasingly disconnected world,” he said. As Senior Program Coordinator, Stephen provides high level customer service to our utility clients and ensures that his group is managing and delivering programs effectively. Stephen’s favourite thing about GreenSaver is that our culture is a catalyst for growth. “I’ve gained more skills and grown more professionally and personally these past 3 years than I really ever thought possible.” Aside from working part time at his yoga studio, Stephen enjoys practicing yoga, fitness and exploring the city. To save energy, Stephen makes it his mission to live a minimalist lifestyle “Currently I rent a small space downtown, which has allowed me to live a mostly pedestrian lifestyle, aside from public transit. I try to consume as little as possible, don’t own a car or drive, and am a big proponent of recycling and composting,” he said. Visit us again in 2 weeks to meet another GreenSaver superstar!
