House prices are rising here in Toronto as well. Also, like Vancouver, we have many empty condo units. Apparently, they are being purchased by hedge funds as an investment, they were never purchased with the intent of somebody making a home there. This is not going to end well. If local people can't afford to live in Toronto's big cities, expect trouble finding and retaining people. One remedy would be to tax vacant buildings, both residential and commercial at double or triple the rate of occupied buildings. This would certainly drop the rents as landlords scramble to fill vacant buildings with people and businesses.
