Business owner, powerlifter and all around great gal Shara Auty shares her short questionnaire below about her time at Mettle. Check it out!: 1. What brought you to Mettle in the first place? I was ready to take the leap to powerlifting as my only training in August 2016. Before that I’d been doing crossfit and strength training. I’d met Tyler a few times and he was always very friendly. It was an easy choice when I was read. 2. What was your first impression? How has that changed? I was intimidated for sure! The gym is full of very strong women & men. I wasn’t sure I’d fit in. Today, I know that Mettle is a big community of amazing people putting in work to be the strongest they can be. I love all the people! 3. What was your first “bright spot” or highlight of your training/progress? Finally competing in my first competition May 2016 was certainly a highlight for me. I’d injured my back late 2015 and lost so much confidence. WoW gave me a training goal and i was stoked to hit my old PRs at the meet. I also got my first total and solidified my love of powerlifting. 4. What are you training for now? War of the West in May. 5. What’s your favorite Mettle memory? I have 2. First, when I joined Milayna & Marianne (whom I didn’t know yet) walked right up to ask if I was the new girl. I found out Tyler let the lifters know I was a new member and the ladies were quick to welcome me to the gym. It was nice to feel welcome. Second, I love the Snack Saturday crew! These ladies aren’t just training partners, they’ve become friends in and out of the gym. I look forward to training Saturday mornings! Our members are always pushing each other to get stronger and stronger. What can we say about this awesome, hard-working young man? Its been an absolute pleasure watching him improve week after week and we can't wait to see what the future holds for his budding strength sports career. Our member highlight this week is the one and only Dylan Moldovan. Check out his short questionnaire below on his time at Mettle: 1. What brought you to Mettle in the first place? I was first exposed to Mettle when searching for a new belt. Tyler and Steve were very welcoming and wanted me to begin powerlifting when we met, so I did a couple of walk-in sessions and was immediately hooked 2. What was your first impression? How has that changed? I was very intimidated when I first joined the gym, everyone was very strong and it was definitely a new experience coming from a box gym. My first impressions quickly changed when I realized everyone is there for the same reason, to get stronger. Everyone is very helpful to one another and it is truly amazing to see the support our team has for each other. 3. What was your first “bright spot” or highlight of your training/progress? My first highlight would have to be competing in my first meet back in January of 2017, and finally achieving a 500lb deadlift. 4. What are you training for now? I am currently in prep for CPU Nationals, competing as a 93kg Equipped Junior 5. What’s your favorite Mettle memory? My favourite memory was when our entire team competed at Provincials and won the best team award. It was a great experience to bond with the team, I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to train with. Mettle Membership info can be found here: http://mettleperformance.ca/?page_id=650
Mettle was contacted by this wonderful young lady and her mom last week about getting involved with their fundraising effort for the Neo-Natal NICU. We met these 2 today and let me tell you, its pretty humbling when you can gain so much inspiration from a young person about giving back to your community. Catherine has raised funds for this cause in different ways for over 4 years. I was immediately interested in helping as my (Tyler) life as a young person was forever changed by the hard working, awesome people at the NICU who saved 2 close family members of mine. Please head on over to Catherine's Cause - A Community Initiative to learn more and to bid on some awesome items including $500 to use towards a membership (for intermidiate/advanced lifters) or personal training (beginners) at Mettle. Bidding opens Feb 22nd. Good luck!
Only a few days left to get in on the Mettle and Sask Strongman clothing pre-order. Message Denis LaBreche for details on sizing and price.
Many of us strength coaches hold back using terms like "phenom" or "phenomenal" but its hard to describe this lady's progress with much else. She exploded onto both the powerlifting and strongwoman scenes a short while ago and has been progressing like crazy ever since. She is Bret Dundas; our feature Member Profile of the week. Here is her short questionnaire on her time here at Mettle: 1. What brought you to Mettle in the first place? The team atmosphere! I wanted to train with like-minded, driven athletes. 2. What was your first impression? How has that changed? First impression? Intimidated! In hind-sight there was nothing to be afraid of, everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Current impression? Inspired! 3. What was your first "bright spot" or highlight of your training/progress? My third squat at 2016 Powerlifting Provincials. That was my first 400 lb squat which broke the SaskPowerlifting record and the Mettle gym record! 4. What are you training for now? When I figure that out, I'll let you know. Right now, I'm just enjoying the process. 5. What's your favourite Mettle memory? My second time at Mettle was for the "Christmas" party, held in January. The very first person to come up and introduce themselves to me was Tyler Harnett (co-owner) and he offered me a beer. That was when I realized this wasn't like any other gym and I was sold. Mettle's members are full of like-minded, progress obsessed, hard-working, kick ass people that hold each other and themselves accountable to their success. Meathead's Kitchen Recipe: BBQ Chicken Legs. This simple, yet delicious protein bomb can be done in the oven as well. You need: -1 pkg chicken drums or thighs -salt and pepper -bbq sauce (optional) Pre-heat your grill or oven to 450F. Season your legs well. Add them to your grill or pop in the oven (on a greased baking sheet) and turn it down to 400F. Flip at 20 mins and cook for another 20 mins. These are done now but you can take it up a notch by putting your fav bbq sauce on and cooking an additional few mins (be careful, the sugars in the bbq can burn easily).
