Parasites THAT THREATEN YOUR PETS PARASITES THAT THREATEN YOUR PETS TICKS HOW YOUR PET PICKS 'EM UP Ticks sense heat and carbon dioxide as animals walk by. They latch onto your pet, embed their mouth parts into his skin and start to feed. WHY ARE THEY BAD? While feeding on your pet's skin, ticks spit out bacteria that cause Lyme Disease, which can lead to arthritis and kidney failure. WHAT TO DO If you find a tick, use gloves and tweezers to carefully remove it. (You want to get the whole tick.) Talk to your vet about Lyme Disease medication. FLEAS HOW YOUR PET PICKS 'EM UP Fleas are commonly picked up from a flea-infested environment such as wood piles, wet grass or carpeting. They usually live on your pet for their entire life cycle. WHY ARE THEY BAD? Flea eggs fall off your pet - onto your bed, couch and carpet - where they hatch and multiply rapidly. If your pet ingests the fleas, she could get tapeworms. WHAT TO DO The best thing to do is make sure your pet is protected with flea medication from the spring to fall. HEARTWORM HOW YOUR PET GETS IT Heartworm is spread through bites from infected mosquitos. Six to seven months after being bitten, the parasite reaches your pet's heart where it matures into long, thin worms. WHY ARE THEY BAD? Heartworm can cause heart or lung problems, which can be fatal. WHAT TO DO Great news! Heartworm is 100% preventable through medication. Talk to your vet about the right treatment for your pet. ROUNDWORM HOW YOUR PET GETS IT Roundworm is 5" long worms that live in the intestines. Puppies and kittens can get roundworm from their mothers at birth, or by eating animal stool with roundworm eggs. WHY ARE THEY BAD? Roundworms take nutrients from your pet, and can grow large enough to block her intestine. Your pet may lose weight, vomit and have diarrhea. Plus family members can get roundworm too. WHAT TO DO Get your pet's stool tested regularly, especially in the first year. Talk to your vet about medication. 2016 Animal Control for Nipissing, Chisholm, Powassan, and Callander: - 40 dogs picked up running at large and impounded; 7 unclaimed and had no ID, so were adopted. 33 dogs claimed and back home...often within an hour or two because they have ID on them. Several owners received warnings from us and/or the bylaw officers, and one owner did was charged with allowing his dog to run loose repeatedly. Our thanks to all the dog owners who took the trouble to make sure their dogs were licensed and had ID on them, and to those owners who kept their dogs at home and/or under control when off their own property. All dogs that are picked up running at large are held in Dept of Agriculture inspected facilities and have in/out pens with water available 24/7 Kennel is heated in winter and fan cooled in summer, and had major renovations in 2015. If a dog has ID on it (ID tag, current license, or a chip with current info), the owner is contacted ASAP and the dog is soon on it's way back home. Impound fees are nominal ($25-$40), but board starts to be charged after the first day the dog is impounded. Unclaimed dogs can be available for adoption after 5 days. If the dog has no current ID on it, it is listed here as well as on Buster's Page (North Bay), and other local shelters are also notified in case they have had a report of the dog missing. We keep a list of dogs that are reported missing, and appreciate owners letting us know if they find the dog or it comes home on its own. We do NOT take cats.

If your dog spends a lot of time outside, he/she should have a draft proof place to go....can be a kennel, barrel, or ???? with a door or flap to hold heat in and drafts out. A dog can "warm" and area 1.5 times it's BODY size...not it's height x length, and when cold will curl up. Bedding needs to be checked/changed regularly as it gets wet especially when there is rain/wet snow about. Long coated dogs may enjoy cold weather more than the short coated dogs. In residential areas where you walk your dog, you need to rinse off his paws after encountering salt/calcium put down to melt ice.
