National Oral Health Month Tip#4 Flossing (part 2) This post is really for the parents out there. You may be brushing your kids teeth, but do you need to be also flossing your kids teeth? The answer is, it depends; If there are spaces in between your child's teeth, then the saliva and the act of brushing will clean these areas. It is when there are tight contacts between teeth, especially their molars when flossing is required. Even at a young age. As I mentioned in the previous post, flossing gets where brushing can't. Left untreated, if x-rays are not taken, cavities in between the teeth can grow unknowingly until it breaks through on the top of the tooth at which point the likelihood is that the tooth will need more extensive treatment or if infected may need to be extracted. The x-ray you see has some pretty extensive cavities in between the teeth that could go unnoticed at a routine dental check without x-rays. Best thing to do is floss in between your kids tight teeth with children's floss picks; Also, better to catch any cavities early by taking x-rays if we know there are tight teeth on kids. I know they are going to hate it, but the sooner we treat teeth, the better chance they keep them. You may think that these are only baby teeth and they are going to lose them anyways so why bother. These baby teeth are important for chewing a proper diet and the best natural space maintainer for the adult teeth to come (so as to avoid possible braces and $$$$ of treatment)

National Oral Health Month Tip#3 The Tongue So we've brushed and we've flossed. People ask why does my breath still smell, I brush and I floss? Are you cleaning your tongue? The tongue is like a sponge for dirty saliva, food/drink and bacteria. Imagine you kept using a dirty sponge without washing and ringing it out how much it would stink over time. Some people brush their tongues which I don't discourage, but it doesn't remove the buildup in your tongue. Recommendation, use a tongue scraper. Gum makes a double ended one that has a brush on one side and a scraper on the other. Use the brush to loosen the gunk from your tongue and then scrape from back to the tip about 5-10 times. Alternatively, you can use your toothbrush (just rinse it well afterwards) and a spoon as a scraper. One other benefit from scraping your tongue is that you remove buildup that block your tastebuds, allowing you to experience flavour of your food better.

National Oral Health Month Tip#2 Flossing (Part 1) I know you're tired of hearing it. Your dentist and hygienist say you need to floss or floss more. Some people say, "my gums bleed when I floss". Well your gums are bleeding because you are not flossing! Flossing removes plaque where brushing can't (between the teeth and under the gums). If your gums bleed when you floss, don't stop. Continue to floss for a couple of weeks and the bleeding should stop. Flossing will prevent tooth decay in between teeth and gingivitis (leading to possible periodontal disease and possible tooth loss). Don't like flossing, try some of the alternatives like the water irrigation tool by Waterpik or the air flosser. Daily rinses and floss picks help too.

It's National Oral Health Month! Upcoming will be some daily tips to improve your oral health and why it's important. Tip #1 Brush your teeth twice a day - seems pretty basic, but most people even though they brush, may not be brushing well; brushing two times a day helps prevent plaque from turning into tartar (see image below). Brush for at least two minutes to get all areas of the mouth and don't forget to brush the gums with your brush at a 45 degree angle to remove plaque at the gumline to prevent your gums from swellin.
