*SLIPPING PUNCHES IN MUAY THAI* Slipping punches in Muay Thai is something that is under utilized altogether and often used incorrectly. It does work when done properly and here is a great example from sparring today. Slip the jab or lead hook, return with the cross. Because a lot of Muay Thai fighters don't step heavy when throwing their lead hand this can work well. Step forward slightly with your left foot as you slip. It will give you a few more inches of reach. This works well from southpaw or orthodox. If you slip properly, you shouldn't be changing your level enough to have to worry about knees. If you become too predictable or time it wrong, you can however slip right into a headkick. In Muay Thai your best bet with slipping is to only slip one punch and to return fire immediately. Trying to move your head away from several is really just setting yourself up to eat shin. Because the range is longer Thai boxing I'd suggest pairing your slips with footwork rather than just slipping stationary like you see in boxing. While there will be times that you can slip and counter without moving your feet, there are even more instances when you won't be able to reach him with your counter punches without advancing.
Thai boxers generally check the leg kick and return with a kick of their own on the same side. Dutch style kickboxers often check and return with punches. This is a great tool to add into padwork with your students

The number one question I get from people is "am I too old for Muay Thai?" No. You aren't. It''s a great sport for fitness, self defense, building confidence and living an overall healthy lifestyle regardless of your age. Will you become a world champion starting at 40? Unlikely. But it doesn't mean you can't push yourself like one if you want to. Shelley is 45 and turning 46 in March. She's learning and developing her technique everyday. All the while getting into great shape
