Today marks the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a strategic holding controlled by the Germans for nearly 3 years that had defeated the British and French on 4 previous assaults. This was a defining moment in Canadian history with all four divisions, for the first time, attacking together. Led by General Sir Arthur Currie from Strathroy, the Canadian troops were victorious. Brigadier-General A. E. Ross declared after the war "in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation." It did not come without a huge sacrifice - 3,598 Canadians killed, 7,000 wounded. Today the Canadian National Vimy Memorial stands in Vimy France as a place of commemoration for Canadian soldiers of WWI killed or presumed dead who have no known grave. Let us never forget the great sacrifices made by our Canadian soldiers.
