Young Tradition Vermont

YOUNG TRADITION TOURING GROUP PERFORMANCES Cape Breton from April 24, 2017 through April 28, 2017 TheYoung Tradition Touring Groupwill be appearing at schools and performance spaces in Cape Breton during the last week of April as part ofits annual performance tour. The Young Tradition Touring Group consists of teen players, singers and dancers who focus on learning and performing traditional music and dance repertoire over the course of eight months, culminating in an April performance tour, this year in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Group members learn from and are supported by musicians and dancers/dance leaders, in addition to musical exchanges with young musicians and dancers while on the tour. The group has recently toured in England, Scotland and Ireland. Led by artistically by renowned musiciansPete Sutherland and Andrea Beaton, the 2016/2017Young Tradition Touring Group includes 23auditioned members ranging in age from 12 to 20.Though most Touring Group members are from Vermont, some hail from Massachusetts, Maine andthe Adirondacks in New York State. Here is some information about four members of the group: • Alexander Allison, 14, is in his second season with the Young Tradition Touring Group. He also plays mandolin, guitar, and keyboard. He has been studying and playing Cajun music for four years, and really looks forward to the April tour. • CeileKronick, 17, grew up in a violin shop (his parents own Vermont Violins) and has played fiddle since age 2. A resident of Duxbury, Vermont, Ceileregularly plays classical violin and fiddleat festivals and competitions throughout New England,with his goal ‘to share great music’. • Stella Kahn, 17, started studying old time fiddle with Katie Trautz when she was seven. She studied Irish fiddle for 9 years with Sarah Blair, and currently studies violin with Laura Markowitz. She is (mostly) self-taught on the guitar. She loves singing, did a tour with the choral group Village Harmony, and enjoys musicals with her high school! She loves cooking and horseback riding (not at the same time)! • Ada Schenck, 15, is a fiddle, banjo and mandolin player from Calais, Vermont. She has played fiddle since age 9 and is proud to be the first banjo player in the Touring Group. Ada studies at the Marshfield School of Weaving, where she enjoys traditional Scottish “waulkings” to the rhythm of Gaelic songs with mentor Norman Kennedy. TALL SHIPS LOUISBOURG 2017 Volunteers wanted! We need your help! The community of Louisbourg is hosting five Tall Ships from August 4-6, on one of our busiest weekends of the summer, as part of the Rendezvous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta. Tall Ships Louisbourg 2017 will offer a fantastic opportunity for the community and visitors to step aboard five beautiful tall ships from across the world, docked at the Louisbourg water front. The visitors will meet crew from around the world and will experience international friendship and culture during what is sure to be an exciting visitor experience. The Tall ships will be the backdrop for the Annual Crab Fest Weekend which will be enhanced by the annual Bike Fest and other activities at the Fortress of Louisbourg, including a fireworks display, and much more. I have been asked to be in charge of recruiting volunteers to help with the weekend activities, as we are expecting an above average increase in people visiting the town during this time. We will need your help. ☺If you would be interested in volunteering for a few hours from August 4-6, 2017, please contact me.
