Vision Statement
To create a world where everyone has the literacy and skills to achieve their full potential through access to education and employment, increased independence and community participation.
Description
Kingston Literacy & Skills (KL&S) is a non-profit community organization composed of professional staff and dedicated volunteers who deliver upgrading and workforce preparation programming to adults and families in Kingston and surrounding communities, free of charge. Since our founding in 1977, we have been committed to supporting adults with low literacy skills, working with them to achieve their goals of further education, employment or independence. Over the years, we have grown to include Family and Early Literacy (FEL) as well as Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programming.

Our instructors here at KL&S spend a lot of time encouraging students to be positive towards themselves and their education. This is a great cheat sheet on how to adopt a growth mindset in learning. (~found on several sites; original source unknown)

Meet Alexa, our Summer Literacy Support Person, funded by a Canadian Summer Jobs grant. Alexa is in her third year in the Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies program at Carleton University in Ottawa. An avid knitter, she also enjoys yoga, slacklining, and talking to people about their pets. She has been doing a great job in our LBS program, helping the teachers with their classes and in the one to one program, developing different resources for students, and even handling the reception area. We are very lucky to have such a multi-talented and energetic person as part of our team.

Here are some shots from our recent volunteer event. Many thanks to Capital Ryan Carter, Royal Military College, who gave an informative overview of the situation in Syria and some great tips for working with new refugees. Thanks also goes to Judi Burrill, Executve Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, for teaching us the importance of self-care.
