facebook.comHappy sunny day everyone! Although it is nice to see Mr. Sun, I would like to use my education and personal experience to remind all of you about the dangers of the sun and the importance of sunscreen. As many of you know, Ava is allergic to the sun and exposure causes uncomfortable rashes for her beginning at this time of year. The following are some definitions, helpful hints, suggestions and myths. UVB is from the sun causes burns and can lead to skin cancer, UVA is around EVERY day and causes premature aging and can actually penetrate glass to affect us. UVB = burn, UVA = aging. I have heard a lot of people say that using an SPF of 30 is the same as using an SPF of 60. That is kind of true and here is why; SPF 15 - filters 93% UVB SPF 30 - filters 97% UVB SPF 50 - filters 98% UVB SPF 100 - filters 99% UVB So with that information, dermatologist suggest the SPF 30 as it is most readily available. The suggestion coming from dermatologists and skin care professionals is to make sure your sunscreen is water resistant, broad spectrum (which means also protects from UVA) and apply it 30 minutes before exposure. You must also re apply generous amounts every 2 HOURS. I have been questioned about the safety of sunscreens as well. The ingredients have gone through much testing and here are the items that cause concern. 1) Oxybenzone - this is the barrier that absorbs the uv rays. Studies have debunked that this is a carcinogen as well as the fact that it affects our hormones. Not true....2) Retinyl Palmitate - thought to increase skin cancer risk to which there is no convincing evidence by scientists that have tested this. Another myth is that people of color do not need sunscreen. Consider this - black skin naturally only has an SPF of 4. This also applies to the myth that if you are tanned you have more protection. Yes, you do, but only an SPF of 4 protection. I have mentioned this example before but Bob Marley died of melanoma which made its way to his lungs and brain. The last myth to debunk is that going to a tanning bed for a base tan is smart before a hot holiday. This is also only give you a protection base of SPF 4. In writing this, I have re educated myself as well. We all get lax in following the guidelines of sunscreen application for us and our children. Hope this helps some of you while purchasing your sunscreen.
