At 180 Forge Works (http://www.180forgeworks.com), I am passionate about working with iron. With anvil, hammer & fire, I coax iron into the forms you see.  At 180 Forge Works, I am passionate about working with iron. With anvil, hammer & fire, I coax iron into the forms you see. The fundamental techniques followed have been in use for thousands of years.

180 Forge Works is located just west of Ottawa, Ontario nestled in the woods in the picturesque region of Almonte.

Although I sell various items at studio tours as well as online and in gallery shops, the primary focus of my business is commissioned work. Commissioned work represents the greatest challenges and is where I can truly let my creative ideas flow. I enjoy working with my customers as they tend to get as excited about the creative process as I do.

Installed yesterday, this 3-seat bench was commissioned by The Glebe Centre in Ottawa for the front of Abbotsford House through a grant from the provincial government. The Glebe Centre provides long-term care and serves seniors living in the community by offering programs and support services for adults aged 55+. The design was a collaborative effort between my shop and the seniors who contributed the artwork for the backrest. The artwork represents the Glebe Centre’s logo with the tree found on the left side of the backrest, the historic building of Abbotsford House found in the centre and maple leaves and banner commemorating Canada’s 150th on the right. The pictures also capture some of the process involved to create the bench.

This is a large custom range hood I recently completed. At 52" tall by 53" wide, it features a double french curve profile with fully welded seams along the length of the corners. The most interesting challenge was indeed those seams. I had to weld together 18g cold rolled sheet where the corners met. The sheet steel is only 0.048" thick and with no trim to cover the welds, there wasn't much room for error. There is no frame supporting the corners so those sheet faces had to meet up in air!

Installed a fireplace frame and doors today. Bi-fold doors, copper accents and ceramic glass. Installed in a beautiful stone home. Pics taken before caulking around perimeter. Loved every minute of this commission!

Steampunk cool! I modified the water valve so it works as the switch. Not my usual kind of work, but it sure was fun to make!

Was asked by Trichology Stylists in Perth to create an industrial-looking base for this awesome, heavy slab of live edge pine that measures over 12' long . The design features I-beams, pipe, heavy plate and reclaimed gear sprockets. Thanks Ashley for the fun commission and for letting me run with the design!

A beautiful day in the country for forging bulrushes. After painting, this set of 5 will be going to a cottage deck near Clayton. They will be installed just outside the glass of my client's railing. The 'grass' will move ever so slightly with the wind.

Just about every time I go pick up steel, my supplier's warehouse is dingy, musty and noisy (which is just about perfect, actually, for a blacksmith). This time, the doors were open, the air was fresh and the sun somehow found its way in and for some reason, I had my camera. Before I went to complain to the management, I took a shot. Such great colours...who knew?

A very similar forging to the one I created back in Feb, this commissioned and newly minted candle holder is being delivered today.
