Our final National Award for 2016 is athlete of the year! Congratulations Brooke McGrath from Macarthur (NSW). Brooke has trained and competed with Special Olympics Australia for over ten years and consistently achieves her personal best in her favourite three sports – athletics, bocce and swimming. Brooke is an ambassador for her local club, serving as athlete representative on the Macarthur club committee. She is dedicated to all her sports and attends every training session. We’d like to congratulate Liz Ewen from Brisbane (QLD) on receiving Coach of the Year in our 2016 National Awards! Liz has been delivering quality swim coaching and heading up aquatics teams for over 22 years at club, state, national and international levels. Liz is always conscious of developing young athletes and last year she was Head Coach of the swimming team at the Special Olympics World Summer Games. Great work Liz! Congratulations Mel and Terry McMahon from Melbourne Inner East (VIC) who have been awarded volunteers of the year in our 2016 National Awards! Together, Mel and Terry have supported their club for over 20 years in a variety of positions. Their favourite role is as sports coordinators of tenpin bowling where they manage the largest group of bowlers (120) in any Special Olympics Australia club! Our 2016 National Awards continue with Young Coach of the Year, awarded to Melinda Nay from Hunter Valley (NSW). As a swim coach, Melinda is currently mentoring two other young coaches and was recently NSW team assistant at the Trans Tasman Tournament. She was named as a finalist in the Young Official of the Year and Young Coach of the Year categories at the NSW Sports Awards. Congratulations Melinda! Each award winner will be announced here on our Facebook page throughout the week. We are pleased to kick this off with the Young Athlete of the Year which goes to Koby Banks from Illawarra (NSW). As well as playing basketball at two National Games, Koby has made significant contributions to his club off the court, through fundraising and promotion of his club. Congratulations Koby.
