This week, Able Australia brought a little Christmas joy to some families that are doing it tough in Jimboomba, Queensland. Thanks to a very long list of generous supporters, we packed and delivered over 100 food hampers for local families in need, while 15 hampers of food and presents were delivered to Jymbilung House – a shelter for indigenous women and children in Beaudesert who have escaped domestic violence. This important hamper drive is now in its 10th year and we were delighted to provide some happiness and emotional support during what can sometimes be a difficult time of year. Our special thanks to everyone who donated and to the volunteers and staff who helped interview families, coordinate the stock and pack all the hampers!

It was a fun and action packed 24 hours for Able Australia on weekend as we celebrated International Day of People with Disability (3 December). On Friday we took part in the annual Blair Disability Links expo in Ipswich, Queensland. Hosted by local MP Shayne Neumann, this event was a great way to showcase the wide variety of services that we and other providers have to offer the local community. The next day, more than 70 people with deafblindness, supporters and volunteers went up, up and away at our Able Day in the Sky event in Melbourne. With thanks to the Royal Victorian Aero Club, participants were given a rare opportunity to experience the sensation of flight over the skies of Melbourne and Port Philip Bay. The day wrapped up with Carols by Candlelight in Knox, Melbourne where more than 20,000 people turned out to get into the festive spirit. Participants from our Burnley Backyard craft group were invited to host a staff on the night to show off their creations and even sell a few items along the way. A busy but fun way to celebrate another great International Day of People with Disability.
