HOW TO DIY INSTALL STACKED STONE WALL FEATURE [Read time: 1-2 minutes] Think this post would help your friends and family? LIKE it, SHARE it, spread the word out! SmilingRock is all about helping you SAVE $$$ Step 1: Clean and/or seal the area First, clean the area you plan to turn into a feature wall. If there are gaps/holes or edges needed to be sealed, then use an appropriate silicon product to seal it. If it's for a water feature, ensure that you waterproof it. Step 2: Laying the first row of Stacked Stone Now it’s time to make sure the base/floor/first ground surface is leveled straight and flat, you can start off by dry laying the first row to observe how it will look it. Step 3: Mix the Tile Adhesive/Glue Purchase any bags of tile adhesive according to your requirements; follow the instructions according to the product, (Ratios of mixing etc.). Use a bucket/tub for easier mixing. Alternatively you could purchase premixed types of adhesive like liquid nails or Sika glue. *Note: you may need to first prime the wall first depending on the type of wall your stone cladding will be installed on* Step 4: Applying the adhesive Use a trowel and/or glue gun and apply to the first level of the bottom of the back wall. Spread it evenly through the surface. Also apply some glue to the back of the individual stacked stone panel and press it onto the wall. Make sure not to be stingy with the glue/tile adhesive, as you don’t want it to fall off later! *Side Tip: Use the first stacked stone panel for your trial and error, be sure to push it in towards the wall so the glue spreads and sticks better* Step 5: Attaching the stacked stone and cutting The easiest way to cut stacked stone is to use a grinder, (angle grinder is fine) equipped with a continuous diamond blade. If you have any other tile/brick/paving cutter that's fine too; most important aspect is to ensure that the blade used is a continuous diamond stone blade. When laying the stacked stone, start from the bottom and make your way up each row. Again don’t be stingy with the adhesive. Try not to have the any joints lined up together; staggering will produce a much better outcome. Step 6: WALLAH! By now it’s pretty much a continuous process of applying the adhesive, attaching your stack stone, and cutting to size (if needed). Keep going till the end of your feature wall. Use a wet sponge to clean up any excess adhesive stuck to the wall. *Side Tip: Sometimes it’s best to do 3-5 levels at a time and let it cure for a day; then continue working upwards as the weight of the stone may result in it falling off the wall. You also have the option to apply a stone sealer on top on the stacked stone for the enhanced color effect and or glossy wet look; it’s all to do with personal preference. *Optional: After completion, you may choose to apply a stone sealer for an enhanced color or a glossy affect. However bear in mind this is personal preference, as the stone sealer will change the look and texture of the natural stone. Measure and Cut your pallets into the shape you want. *Tip: square/rectangle planter boxes are simple and very easy to assemble, just like Legos. Remember to nail and glue the joints of your planter to reinforce and enhance the strength of your planter. Once your planter is built, the fun begins! Decorating it with your stone cladding! Now it’s time to make sure the base/floor/first ground surface is straightly leveled, you can start of buy dry laying the first row to observe how it will look it. Use a trowel and/or glue gun and apply to the first level of the bottom of the back wall. Spread it evenly through the surface. Apply some to the back of the stacked stone panel cladding as well. Be sure to not be stingy with the glue/tile adhesive, as you don’t want it to fall off later! *Side Tip: Use the first stacked stone panel for your trial and error, make sure you give it a slight push towards the wall so the glue spreads and sticks better* To cut it the stacked stone, easiest way is to go ahead with a hand grinder equipped with a continuous diamond stone blade. Corners are done via mitering/cutting at 45* On to laying the stacked stone, start from the bottom and make your way up per level. Again don’t be stingy with the adhesive. Try not to line the joints together as it gives a better outlook when you can’t see the joints. WALLAH! You now have your own personalized luxury stone planter box. Good Work!

HOW TO DIY INSTALLATION OF ARTIFICIAL GRASS [Read time: 1-2 minutes] Think this post would help your friends and family? LIKE it, SHARE it, spread the word out! STEP ONE - EXCAVATION OF EXISTING AREA Once you have marked out the area for your new synthetic lawn, remove the existing lawn and soil to a depth of 70mm, ready to fill with 60mm of blue metal dust. If prepping for a car traffic area (verge) clear the area to a depth of 100mm ready to fill with 80mm of road base, and 10mm of blue metal dust. If reticulation is present it is simply a matter of capping each pop up sprinkler. Tip: It is well worth hiring a turf-cutter if you have existing lawn to remove which will save you a considerable amount of time and effort. Don’t forget to hire a skip bin for the disposal of the soil and leftover aggregates. Calculating the correct amount of aggregate to order is simple. For example: Total area = 40sqm. Multiply 40 x 60 = 2400, which calculates to 2.4 cubic metres. The same equation applies to bin size. STEP TWO - INSTALLING THE BASE Compacting The Base For Synthetic Lawn. Fill the area with blue metal dust. (Note that it will compact down to 50mm). Carefully screed the area and thoroughly compact it using a vibrating plate compactor. Lightly dampen with water to help bind the dust and this will allow you to see any low areas, which will need to be filled as you go. Compact a second time. Tip: Spend extra time on the base work as the result will be the difference between an average installation job and a professional installation! Try to give the area some contour and body because an overly flat lawn can look “fake”. STEP THREE - INSTALLING THE SYNTHETIC LAWN Synthetic lawn is manufactured with the fibres aligned in a single direction. It is very important to ensure the grain is running in the same direction when laying out the full pieces of lawn. Cut the lawn to the desired shape using a sharp Stanley knife. Invariably there will be joints where the pieces meet. You will need to ensure that the seams are cut as close to the “rib” or “grain” to allow for better placement of the two pieces when joining later. First, lay the lawn down and cut, leaving about 50mm around all the edges before placing the lawn together so that the joins are not visible. Allow a gap of about 10-20mm between pieces for best results. This can vary slightly from one lawn to another. Stand back and take a look before joining together. Trust your eyes! Now that you are happy with everything fold back each piece about 400mm and lay the joining tape (silver side facing down) down the centre of the two pieces. Using lawn pins anchor the tape down at each end. Peel off the protection tape and simply place the two pieces back together. Once done, trim all the edges (Again remember to leave 10-20mm excess), pin around the outside edges 30mm in and 500mm apart. Also pin the joins for extra strength. Tip: Take care not to trap the blades of lawn under the pins. STEP FOUR - FILLING WITH WHITE SAND For great looking synthetic lawn, brush the lawn up with a stiff garden broom, brushing against the grain. Spread the washed white sand over the lawn as evenly as possible either by hand or shovel. Aim for a depth of 5-10mm depending on the pile height of the lawn. Brush again to distribute the sand evenly. Job well done! Tip: The sand infill is so important so don’t compromise. Not only does it improve the look of the lawn but also more importantly it protects the backing from the UV rays.
