Engaging women in artistic fashion designs and creating sleek designs utilizing Gara & Batik ink tie dye techniques. Kontiki Cultural Women Empowerment (KcWE) Inc. is a voluntary non for profit Group from the Sierra Leone and African and non African communities whose main goal is to build the capacity of women of all ages from refugee and migrant backgrounds to become self-sufficient, learn new skills and become socially connected. The group does this by engaging women in artistic fashion designs and creating sleek designs utilizing Gara and Batik ink tie-dye techniques. Providing training and developing a sewing program for community women of all ages and migrant backgrounds especially for young adult and youth across Victoria.
Builds the capacity and experience of participating community organizations through mutual support, skills development, knowledge sharing and mentoring between partnering organizations.
Participant are provided with the opportunities to work as part of a team alongside with qualified and experienced fashion designers and turn recycling fabric by ensuring that textiles and all kinds of excess fabric cut offs are used with the objectives of reducing waste to the environment and turn recycled and excess manufacturing materials into original clothing.
It is the aim of the group to undertake activities improving literacy, knowledge and numeracy skills through external partnerships and the wellbeing of women achieving empowerment, reducing unemployment and for self sustainability through ongoing skills.
The group is currently providing classes in sewing, pattern design and cutting, by learning how to develop and present design concepts, sew prototypes, create garments to completion stage and also provides for opportunities to involve young women in runway [fashion] or catwalk.
The classes offer creative art design in gara ink tie-dye and batik in fabric in fabric clothing featured at our launch and fundraiser event in 2014.
Kontiki Cultural Women Empowerment Inc.is associated with Brimbank City Council's Residents Artists Program curated by the Arts and Culture Develop Unit.
The group has been a proud participant of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) celebrations each year.
The group also offer job like work experience which places job seekers in activities where they can gain and develop the skills that employers want. Increase their confidence and show that they are ready to work.
The Group is located in the Western suburbs of Victoria and currently undergoing training sessions/activities at the Sunshine Arts Studios.
