Congratulations to our 1st Year Dental Student Zena Ibrahim for presenting at Students in Health and Medical Research Conference (SHMRC). Last year, she undertook her honours in Pharmacology through UWA in conjunction with the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. She spent the year investigating the role of paraspeckles in neuronal health and the role mutations in paraspeckle proteins could play in disease such as ALS. She was the first person within her lab to design a differentiation and stress protocol for the neuroblastoma cell line that she was working with. Furthermore, due to the latest technologies in gene editing, such as CRISPR-Cas9, She was able to replicate the protein mutations found in patients and transfect them into healthy cells to see the effect on cell health and viability. The research area into subnuclear bodies, lncRNA and toxic misaggregation of paraspeckle proteins is cutting edge. Her research was the first to show, in vivo, the effect of paraspeckle mutation on neuronal health. This work is still being continued by herself and a post doctorate in the Fox Lab and is also in the process of being published.

Natasha and Anjuli's Top 5 Dental Health Tips It's dental health week from the 1st - 7th August. So here are some dental health tips from the University Dental Students' Society (UDSS) education representatives. Keep Smiling :) 1. Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes. Fluoride is important because it stops decay from progressing as it strengthens the outer layer of our teeth (enamel) 2. Floss at least once a day using dental floss. If you’re having trouble with using floss, try interdental cleaners. Flossing is important because it removes any bacteria and food particles that are found between your teeth. For more information on how to floss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhdoPXNKNm4 3. Chew sugar-free gum this will help with stimulating saliva flow. . Ideally chew gum after snacking or between meals. This will help keep your teeth healthy, prevent dry mouth and bad breath 4. Have your teeth cleaned professionally by a dentist or a hygienist every 6 months. However, this varies depending on your oral health status. You might need a more frequent clean or can go longer without a clean. Speak to your dentist or hygienist for recommendations. 5. Avoid tobacco; this will make sure your breath remains fresh, prevent staining on your teeth, reduce the risk of oral cancers and gum disease
