Sabrina H Ricketson
(Senior Speech Pathologist)
Sabrina is a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist registered with Speech Pathology Australia. She has a Bachelors of Science in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and she obtained her Masters in Speech Language Pathology from Macquarie University. Sabrina has 10 years of clinical experience working in different settings with children with varied speech, language, learning, behavioural issues, as well as, challenges with academic skills (reading and writing) resulting from premature birth, presence of various syndromes like Downs, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD, ADHD, Auditory processing disorder, intellectual impairment, neurogenic disorders, dyspraxia amongst others. Sabrina believes the diagnostic process is as important as the therapy a child receives. Quite often, what is presented on the surface is taken at face value resulting in therapy that doesn’t always meet the child’s needs. Her therapeutic sessions are custom made, goal directed, fun and nurturing to meet each child’s individual needs across different environments. Over the years, she has utilized a holistic structured approach when working with children and has seen its benefits. She works closely with family members, caregivers, and teachers so the child benefits optimally from the process. Sabrina is passionate about working with children, advocating for their needs, supporting the family involved and ensures the therapeutic process is effective.

Language and Maths?? Definitely! 📚 “Vocabulary knowledge is a cornerstone of language development and eventually, of academic success” - Johnson & Yeates (2006). ✔️ Vocabulary plays a key role in academic success due to its strong correlations to comprehension, oral language, reading and writing (Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2013). ✔️Vocabulary intervention should help students develop robust word knowledge, reading skills, spelling and appropriate word use in a range of contexts (Steele & Mills, 2011). 👉🏼Students are constantly exposed to new vocabulary across subjects / domains / grades! 👉🏼Language ability is needed for maths competency and numeracy. 👉🏼Numeracy is required for life skills (employment, temperature, earnings, taxes, transport timetables, medications…). 👉🏼Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects required for reading and writing skills!
<< Language >> What does the research say? “Proficiency in oral language provides children with a vital tool for thought. Without fluent and structured oral language, children will find it very difficult to think” - Wittgenstein. 👉🏼Language is a code made up of rules - including what words mean, how put make words and how to put words together to form sentences. Language includes, but is not limited to: ✔️Listening ✔️Comprehension ✔️Vocabulary ✔️Reading (decoding) ✔️Writing What is the foundational skills required for language development (reading, writing, talking)❓❓❓ Vocabulary, listening and understanding! ALTERNATIVE SEATING options are highly recommended to assist us stay alert and focused with desk work activities. For children, this means extended periods of time spent at a table when completing school based tasks. The SWOPPSTER stool is a perfect example of how the right type of seating can improve posture and attention, as it allows the spine and pelvic floor to remain dynamic and supported, preventing pain and discomfort. We had a blast trialing the Swoppster today! It allowed for natural on-task, in-seat movement. Happy Speech Pathology Week!! Communication is one of the greatest capacities we are endowed with as human beings! However, around five per cent of our Aussie population has a communication disorder. No person should be left with out a voice. We all have a role in promoting communication access and improving the quality of life for so many! Here are some simple tips we can use to better communicate with people who have communication impairments. We are always here to COMMUNICATE at our clinic!
“It is not enough to know the kind of disorder a person has, one must know the kind of person who has the disorder” - Charles Van Riper, a pioneer in the field of Speech-language Pathology. From the moment Speech-Language Pathologists begin their journey with clients and their carers, they seek to understand their personal thoughts, feelings, needs and behaviours. We believe that no treatment plan is the same and getting to know our clients is one of our number one priorities. Communication is a personal behaviour, which deserves personal understanding and attention!
Speaking the language Language and speech are two separate things. Language is a rule-based system that allows messages to be exchanged from one person to another. Language includes grammar and vocabulary. It is what you understand and can express. We produce language during: • Spoken words • Writing • Symbols • Sign language On the other hand, speech is how you use sounds in spoken words. It refers to the pronunciation, smoothness and quality of voice when speaking. This crucial distinction between speech and language is the reason why our profession is often termed “Speech-language pathologists”. Speech and language are powerful tools, necessary to express ourselves and engage in the wonderful world around us. Talk to a speech-langauge pathologist if you have any concerns regarding your child’s language and/or speech.
