Today I tried the new Curaprox Black is White toothpaste for the first time. I was actually super excited as I've seen a lot online about activated charcoal/carbon pastes but I was always concerned about the abrasiveness of other products. To hear that this paste is actually quite low on the "abrasive scale" with the added benefit of fluoride and hydroxylapatite really got me excited! Here's what the website says about Curaprox: "Refreshingly lemonyBlack Is White whitening toothpaste removes discolouration using activated carbon without abrading or bleaching. 950 ppm fluoride. Strengthens oral health: enzymes protect against tooth decay and support the salivary functions. 15'000 ppm hydroxylapatite (nano) remineralize tooth enamel and seal exposed dentine channels.Plus: Physical blue filter; cooling sensation while brushing.RDA ~59. No SLS. No triclosan. No bleaching agents. No plastic particles. 90mlCan be used as a regular toothpaste without any limitations. " Here's what I thought; I couldn't taste a lemony taste, more of a mild minty, refreshing taste that I did like. Squeezing out black toothpaste was kind of weird, but a nice novelty. It was also very messy and was actually took a bit of wiping to get it off my face, not a good look. It contains no SLS which is good to hear. SLS stands for sodium lauryl sulphate and is an additive added to many products like toothpaste, shampoos and shower gels. It acts as a foaming agent. Some people are sensitive to SLS as it can irritate skin and oral tissues, especially people with lichen planus. Despite it being SLS free it still foamed up well. It contains 950ppm fluoride, which is less than most regular toothpastes which normally have 1450ppm. It also contains hydroxylapatite, which is a complex of calcium phosphate. Along with fluoride, this can strengthen the enamel and seal the dentine, which can help with sensitivity. However, as the toothpaste is black, you do need to rinse thoroughly to remove the residue, and this unfortunately will rinse away some of the benefits. The whitening effect comes from the non-abrasive effect of activated carbon to absorb the stains. I noticed a difference straight away. As soon as I rinsed out, the light stains that were on my teeth were gone and my teeth did look a bit brighter. My teeth felt smooth and they looked shiny. My mouth felt very clean after using Curaprox Black is White. I think this product is going to be a wonderful alternative to bleaching for those who can't bleach for one reason or another. For those who have composite resins in our front teeth (like me), the carbon draws out stains and I'm told will lighten your fillings; which is perfect for those with old resins that are sound, just discoloured. The price, $50 for the tube with toothbrush, is reasonable given the higher cost of other carbon toothpastes on the market, especially given that Black is White has the benefit of not being as abrasive and having the fluoride & hydroxylapatite to help strengthen the teeth. But I think it's the type of paste that you'd use a few times a week or alternative weeks due to the price. If you've tried Curaprox Black is White, I'd love to hear what you think! Dee
