Whether you are the parent of a child with allergies, or hosting a guest with allergies paediatric dietitian Katrina Grey suggests that a little preparation and planning can help you to enjoy the season safely. Here are our 6 tips for an Allergy-Free Christmas! 1) Consider hosting- this enables you to be in full control of what is served. 2) Always read ingredient labels carefully. 3) Modify recipes using allergen-free ingredients: swap wheat for whole-grain & gluten -free flour; ground flaxseeds or applesauce instead of eggs; almond butter in place of peanut butter; and calcium fortified soy milk instead of cows . 4) Focus on whole, minimally processed foods- swap packaged foods for foods such as vegetables with olive oil and herbs, salads with ingredients such as tomatoes, cucumber, and avocado, fresh fruit salads, and lean proteins which have not been marinated. 5) Prevent cross contamination- keep surfaces clean & practice good hygiene. 6) Stay safe when eating away from home- make sure to communicate your child's needs clearly at restaurants, or if eating at the home of friends and family, offer to bring a few snacks or desserts where you know exactly what the ingredients are.
Everybody Loves Raymond Uses Active Listening - from Parent Effectiveness Training
A simple guide to active listening 1. Concentrate completely on what your child is saying. The best way is to crouch down to their level and maintain eye contact. 2. Avoid interupting your child and let them finish their sentence. 3. Repeat back to your child what they have said. Watch how the Romano's do it!.

Beat the heat this summer when playing and engaging in sporting activities with your children outside. Dr Sarah Donoghue has some great tips to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration. - Avoid the playing outside at the hottest part of the day between 11-3pm. - Wear light weight, light coloured loose fitting clothing made of natural fibres. - Preventative measures can be undertaken to minimise heat injuries. Examples include the provision of shade, hats, appropriate sunscreen, spray bottles and drinking water. - Children with illness such as a virus, flu or gastroenteritis or who are feeling unwell are at an extreme risk of heat illness if exercising in moderate to hot weather. Heat stroke is a potentially fatal condition and must be treated immediately. The best first aid measures are “Strip/Soak/Fan”: strip off any excess clothing; soak with water; fan; ice placed in groin and armpits is also helpful. It is important to also seek medical assessment early.
