Grooming Your New Fur Baby Every puppy's coat is different and when they need their first groom can vary greatly, however they should be taken to your groomer to get them used to full grooming gradually. Maybe start with a wash, dry and brush out or just a bath and tidy, this way, they will learn to accept grooming as a happy experience that they will enjoy. Some hints for getting your new puppy used to grooming: * Brush regularly - using treats as a reward, so your puppy associated brushing as a positive experience. * Comb regularly - it is important to use both a brush and comb, the brush is from the top coat and the comb is then used to get to the coat close to the skin. * Play with your puppies feet and ears a lot, so they will be used to being touched when they come to the groomers. * Run a silver teaspoon over your puppy's nose so they get use to seeing flashes of silver near their eyes as they will experience this when the scissors are being used to tidy around eyes and fringes. * Hair Clipper App - there are a couple of hair clipper apps available for free to download, these are a great idea to get your puppy use to sound of the clippers, you can download the app and pretend to use your phone as clippers.

Bathing your Dog Many people like to bath their dogs between their grooming sessions. This is a great way to keep your dog clean, but you need to remember that there is a right way and a wrong way to bath at home. You must always brush out your dog’s coat BEFORE you bath them. Most people don’t know that this is the number one reason your dog’s coat may become matted. If there are any knots in his or her coat, the water may cause their coat to become tighter and tighter until your groomer has no choice but to shave the coat short. Brushing before the bath will help to prevent this situation. Brush the coat out first with a brush and then go through it with a comb to make sure all the matts are out. Most of the time the matting will be close to the skin, so you have to make sure you are not just brushing the top coat but combing right down to the skin. You should also make sure you do not brush super hard next to the skin so as not to give your dog a brush burn. You should use the comb to get close to the skin. Once all the matts are out, you can proceed to the bath. It is important to brush your dog after the coat has dried as well but this will be much easier since all of the knots were taken out prior to the bath.
