HOW is it that 10 000 steps per day came to be the standard recommendation? In the 1960's, a Japanese research team lead by Dr. Yoshiro Hatano determined that the average Japanese person took between 3,500 to 5,000 steps per day. His study concluded that if people were to increase their steps to 10,000 per day they would be happier, healthier, and thinner! We would also burn about 20% of our caloric intake through this activity. Dr Hatano would later invent the "manpo-kei", which translates to 10,000 steps meter, or what we know today as the pedometer!
