BARBELL BILTONG
Description
Barbell Biltong is for athletes, adventurers and health enthusiasts. It's the perfect high protein, low carb, real food that’s 100% paleo. Two brothers from South Africa with a passion for health, movement and the outdoors embarked on a camping trip into the Australian bush. Needing a healthy and convenient source of protein, they drew on the wisdom of their African ancestors to make biltong. Steaks were marinated, spiced and hung to dry in granny's old cupboard. The brothers' biltong was such a hit that requests soon started flooding in - and so it was that Barbell Biltong was born.
Barbell Biltong is for athletes, adventurers and health enthusiasts that are mindful of what they consume. We only use grass fed Australian beef and our biltong contains no preservatives, dairy, gluten, soy or added sugar. It’s the perfect high protein, low carb, real food that’s 100% paleo.

Conquer a mountain a week and you’ll never feel weak. Bounding up steep terrain is a big bang for your buck activity. It gives you the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and work on your booty. I try to change things up each time I make my way up a mountain. When I feel I deserve a torturous stream of lactic acid pumping through my body, I run up. When I’m looking to channel a more primal state of mind, I get off the the old beaten trail and intuitively navigate my way to the top. Most of the time, however, I simply walk up the man-made path of least adventure. Whichever way you choose to tackle this natural beast, you will always get your blood pumping and your muscles firing. As an added bonus, the small adjustments that you make as you encounter uneven surfaces along the way are fantastic for your joints and core. What is even more enriching about a hike is the mindset it invokes. Hiking with friends cultivates top notch conversations that often fail to transpire in other social settings. Hiking solo, on the other hand, provides a perfect environment to reflect on and contemplate things that are important to you. Now what….? Find your closest mountain. Start walking towards it. I don’t care if it takes you a week, don’t stop until you reach the peak! Cheerio, Tom #hiking #mountains #proprioception #introspection #reachthepeak #barbellbiltong

Barbell Biltong has usually got nothing to do with burgers. That’s set to change this week, because we’re getting prepped for the upcoming Burgers, BBQ and Beers Market in the CBR City. This one is on in Civic Square this Friday and Saturday. We decided to celebrate the event by designing our own burger. Our goal was to come up with the healthiest burger possible. We called it the Kettleburger and you can find the recipe below. Ingredients. • 1 Burger. The greasier the better. Ask your chef to prepare the burger with the oldest and hottest vegetable oils they can. • 1 Extremely heavy kettlebell. • Gravity. #kettleburger #foodcoveredlens #slowmo #crushingcalories #burgersbbqbeers #ChristmasInTheCity #CBRSparkles #burgerrecipe #biltong #kettlebell #barbellbiltong #thatwasfun

If you like #barbellbiltong and crave other guilt free snacks, I would highly recommend a transition to the dark side. I started with 70% but have slowly learnt to love the rich flavours of dark chocolate. Hats off to those who can appreciate the rare 100%, our favourites are from @enigma_chocs. Let me know if you have any good suggestions. Love, Luke #darkside #darkchocolate #guiltfree #healthysnack #chocolate #lindt

Pan fried kale, almonds and torn up apricots with a handful of Barbell Biltong, all covered in freshly squeezed lime. This meal is how I started my day. It took me no longer than 10 minutes to cook, so simple, fresh and perfectly healthy. It’s my new go to. Here’s how it’s thrown together. 1. Heat a pan; HOT, throw in some healthy oils - I used a combination of butter, tallow and coconut oil. 2. Grab a Kale; shred the leaves off the stalks and toss them in the pan, turn every so often. 3. Throw in some nuts of your choosing, I like mine a little roasted so I put them in early. 4. Fry the Kale until wilted, turning less often if you’d like some leaves crispy. Tip the kale onto a plate (or better yet, a chopping board) 5. Pick a fruit of your choosing. I’ve got some luscious apricots from the farmers markets that are absolutely mind blowing, but I think any fruit will complement. Cut it up and throw it over your kale. Also consider giving the fruit 20 seconds on your hot pan; this worked well with the apricots. 6. Chuck on a handful of Barbell Biltong. 7. Squeeze over with lemon or lime. 8. Sprinkle with organic whole cane sugar. 9.Jokes! When cooked, the kale withers by about 70% and absorbs a great deal of oil, so typically use more of both than you think. This is a fantastic way to get in a healthy dose of fat and leafy greens, fitting for low-carbers. #barbellbiltong Enjoy!

We’ve expressed our love for stretching before and it’s time to reiterate - being flexible will improve your daily life. Moreover, stretching is relaxing and I find that it helps calm the mind. One of our top stretches is the dowel stretch. The assisting partner must position their feet at the base of the stretchee’s spine with their other foot neatly placed between the shoulder blades. The stretchee will grab the dowel overhand and let their partner pull back on the dowel until they feel a nice, intense stretch in the chest. This stretch should go on for around 5 minutes and includes multiple phases of contraction and relaxation. Relaxation is always key when stretching. Limitations in flexibility are usually caused by precautionary neural pathways rather than by mechanically short muscles. The brain acts to prevent movements into unexplored ranges in fear of what will happen there. Somebody under general anaesthetic will often become incredibly flexible due to these neural inhibitions being quietened. Stretching is therefore really more of a mind game than anything. You must be able to convince your own brain that a position is safe by simply relaxing there... It’s a literal case of mind over matter. Grab a friend, grab a dowel and try out this stretch! Opening up the chest is important for posture, negating back pain, gaining functional movement and preventing injury. If you don’t have time to stretch, just relax anyway ✌️ #stretch #stretchtherapy #flexibility #stretching #mobility #dowel #dowelstretch #relax #relaxation #barbellbiltong #deepbreathing #biltong #canberralife #canberrafood #mindovermatter #peace

Biltong goes really well with raw veggies. Eating raw vegetables is stupidly easy and they taste great. A lot of the time uncooked veggies are even better for you than their cooked companions. “If you cook your veggies in water, you'll lose some water-soluble vitamins, because they leach out into the cooking water” I read. Screw that… I want all the vitamins I can get! If you don’t trust who you’re buying from you should give the veggies a quick wash before hooking in. If you’re organised, avoid buying food from grocers you don’t know and trust in the first place. Take bites of multiple veggies at once and see how they taste together. It’s nice to see how these veggies taste direct from the earth. Try them out with our biltong. This is our go to meal we’re getting hungry at a fresh food market. A raw capsicum goes exceptionally well with biltong, as does carrot. Don’t forget to cook your Cruciferous vegetables. #lazyhealthy #cruciferousaraus #cruficerous #vegetables #veggies #raw #quote #biltong #capsicum #beans #carrot #barbellbiltong #paleo

My hands are my feet? ... Or at least they were once not so different, back when our ancestors crawled on all fours. I often find that I over look the meaning of these simple facts and am then astounded by their implications once fully considered. Looking at my feethands now, it's startlingly evident to see how small amounts of consistent progress can lead to big changes, given enough time. Growing up in a culture where we all want it NOW, I try to keep thoughts like this in mind. It's inspiring to know feethands are possible and also humbling to recognise the dedication involved to get there. Whatever you are working towards, don't be discouraged by comparing yourself to where you are not. Embrace the small changes and give it time. We've adopted this mindset for #barbellbiltong and have just packaged some of our best #biltong to date. We've also got some exciting things in the works for 2017! We’ve just hung another huge amount of juicy steaks. Our systems are getting more and more efficient and so is the consistency of our biltong. Our time in the kitchen (and all of our time working on Barbell Biltong for that matter) has been about implementing systems to get tasks done efficiently. Striving always to streamline our processes makes work easier and faster. It has been an important lesson never to become too comfortable with the way things are already done as there will always be a better way out there. We’ll be absent from the Capital Region Farmers Market this weekend.
