Some great news has come from last week’s field trip on Nyikina Mangala country. Nyikina Mangala rangers, working with WWF Australia scientists, have found new, previously unknown populations of Wiliji (the west Kimberley race of the Black-footed Rock-Wallaby) east of the Edgar Range. Wiliji were found at Munggadah and just east of Mount Jarlemai. The rangers also explored an area known as Irralala but could not locate them there. The Nyikina Mangala rangers were deliberately surveying remote areas with the hope of finding new populations of this endangered species. Prior to this, they had only found Wiliji on the Edgar, Erskine and Grant Ranges. Finding Wiliji populations in these outlying ranges is encouraging and increases the possibility of finding unknown populations in other areas.

Fifty delegates from the Kimberley have made the journey to Townsville for the National Native Title Conference. The event coincides with the 25th anniversary of the watershed Mabo decision and comes soon after the historic referendum talks in Uluru. Kimberley mob will present at the conference telling people about their story and experiences of native title. We received a wonderful welcome to country by Mrs Iris Glenbar and we are looking forward to learning from other native title reps so we can continue to improve how we manage and protect land rights in the Kimberley. Stay tuned for more #ntc17 #mabo25
