Professor Mark Buntine, Head of the Department of Chemistry at Curtin, has been awarded the 2016 Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Leighton Memorial Medal. The Leighton Medal is the RACI’s most prestigious award and is made in recognition of eminent services to the Australian chemistry profession. Mark has continuously served in RACI leadership roles for more than 20 years, culminating in being elected as the national president in 2012. Mark has served on the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Chemistry, and in 2011 led the nationwide development of Threshold Learning Outcome statements for Australian chemistry graduates. These statements have formed the foundation for a reimagined RACI university accreditation framework – a student-focused project undertaken during Mark’s RACI presidency. Most recently, Mark served on the Excellence for Research in Australia’s 2015 Research Evaluation Committee for the Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences. Congratulations to Mark on this outstanding achievement!
