Does your pooch have arthritis? Winter can cause muscles to stiffen up and become quite sore for your beloved fur babies. Here are four ways to keep your four-legged friends comfy during the colder months: 1. Exercise Taking your dog out for regular activity is a great way to keep them mobile. Exercise, such as walking on the leash or swimming, is great, but high impact activities, such as chasing a ball, can lead to permanent damage to the joints. Not sure what’s best? We can help! 2. Stay warm Keeping your dog comfortable and warm is important during the cold season. Providing them with a well-padded bed in a warm, indoor location can make all the difference (and a good excuse for more snuggles!). 3. Chat to your partner in petcare! There are various treatments available to manage arthritis. The best management plan will depend on factors such as age, severity of signs, progression of the disease process and whether they have any other health problems. We recommend all arthritis patients should be accurately diagnosed before starting a treatment plan. Did you know osteoarthritis is common in both humans and dogs? In dogs, arthritis is usually a result of the ongoing wear and tear and instability in the joints, although other factors can contribute to the likelihood of your fur friend being affected by arthritis, including: 1. Age: Some dogs show signs as early as the age of one year. Most dogs will show signs of osteoarthritis as they get older - 80% by age 8. 2. Breed: Certain large breeds like Labs, Retrievers and Shepherds are more likely to develop osteoarthritis at a young age. However, small to medium-sized dogs can have osteoarthritis too. 3. Joint issues: Hip dysplasia, knee problems, a ligament injury and joint surgery can put your dog at risk for osteoarthritis. 4. Weight: It’s important to know the optimal weight for your dog’s breed. Try to keep them close to that weight to minimise stress on their joints. We can help you asses your pet’s ideal size! Thanks to Parnell Living Science for the great video!

Have you noticed your pet’s appetite has increased over the colder months? They may require dietary changes to increase energy intake rather than fat content. This is especially true for outdoor pets that will use more energy to keep warm. You don’t want your pet to gain weight over the winter, but to maintain their body condition. Excess weight gain can put strain on your pet’s joints, often leading to inflammation and early onset arthritis. We can assist you with weight management, including a specific diet and exercise plan for your pet!
