The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal, Phil. D and IX Bishop of Southern Ohio will be the preacher and celebrant at St. John's this coming Sunday, May 7th for both the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Please join us! He will also be leading an adult forum on the baptismal covenant at 10:25 a.m. During the 11:15 a.m. service he will be doing confirmations, receptions and reaffirmations of baptismal vows for parishioner form St. John's, Worthington, and from St. Alban's, Bexley. Bishop Breidentahl brings a passion for civic involvement, strong lay leadership and ministry and Biblical preaching. A noted author, he has written about the issues of same-sex unions, what constitutes a Christian household and how to raise ethical children. His books include Sacred Unions: A New Guide to Life-Long Commitment, published in 2006, and Christian Households: The Sanctification of Nearness, published in 1997. Prior to his election as Bishop of Southern Ohio in 2006, Bishop Breidenthal served as the dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel at Princeton University. Ordained to the priesthood in 1982, Bishop Breidenthal brings a strong intellectual and academic background to the diocese. Before moving to Princeton, he served for nearly a decade as the John Henry Hobart Professor of Christian Ethics and Moral Theology at General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was a senior chaplain at Harvard School in California and an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellow in Oxford, England. He also has served in two parishes in Oregon and assisted at a congregation in New York City. In the wider church, Bishop Breidenthal has served on the General Board of Examining Chaplains of the Episcopal Church from 1997-2001 and as director for the Center for Jewish-Christian Studies and Relations at General Theological Seminary from 1994-1997. He also was a member of the planning and facilitation team for the 1996 Conference on Third World Debt Relief sponsored by the Office of UN Anglican Observer. He is married to Margaret Garner Breidenthal, and they have two daughters, Magdalene and Lucy.
Karen Peeler, soprano, on the Music Series at St. John's
This year’s Music Series closes with a fantastic program by Dr. Karen Peeler, Professor Emeritus of Voice and Pedagogy at the Ohio State University. Dr. Peeler has performed leading roles in opera, operetta, and musical theater throughout the United States and has concertized widely in the U.S., Austria, and Italy. She will be joined by a host of friends, including pianists Robin Guy, Michael Lester, and Rose Zuber; violist Henrietta Neeley; soprano Marley Nemeth; tenor Michael Hamilton; and narrator Christopher Purdy. We invite you to enjoy excellent music in a beautiful and historic space. Each of the Music Series concerts is followed by an artist’s reception in the Atrium, hosted by the St. John’s Hospitality and Fellowship Committee. There is no charge for admission to any of our concerts; a freewill offering will be taken to support the Music Series.
His Place dinner at St. John's Columbus is this week! Our parish is providing the meal at St. John's Columbus this Wed., May 3. We can use volunteers to set up, serve, and clean up. It's easy and it's great fellowship. Contact the church office for more information.
Welcoming New Neighbors: A Gala for Refugees Served by the Episcopal Church
Confluence Year, the Episcopal Service Corps Program of St. John's Episcopal Columbus, is proud to host a Happy Hour Gala on behalf of Community Refugee & Immigration Services (CRIS) at Arepazo Tapas Bar Grille in the Brewery District. We could use some additional hands at the Friendship Dinner this Thursday, 4/27 in the Undercroft. Meal prep begins at 4:30 and dinner is at 6:30. The choir tours nationally and internationally, with recent and future engagements in Washington D.C., Italy, Spain, the Republic of Ireland, Cleveland, Buffalo and Toronto, Canada. West Liberty University is a four-year college located near Wheeling, WV. We invite you to enjoy excellent music in a beautiful and historic space.
