Ben Mezrich Signing

Science fiction becomes reality in this Jurassic Park-like story of the genetic resurrection of an extinct species--the woolly mammoth--by the bestselling author of The Accidental Billionaires and The 37th Parallel. "With his knack for turning narrative nonfiction into stories worthy of the best thriller fiction" (Omnivoracious), Ben Mezrich takes us on an exhilarating true adventure story from the icy terrain of Siberia to the cutting-edge genetic labs of Harvard University. A group of young scientists, under the guidance of Dr. George Church, the most brilliant geneticist of our time, works to make fantasy reality by sequencing the DNA of a frozen woolly mammoth harvested from above the Arctic circle, and splicing elements of that sequence into the DNA of a modern elephant. Will they be able to turn the hybrid cells into a functional embryo and bring the extinct creatures to life in our modern world? Along with Church and his team of Harvard scientists, a world-famous conservationist and a genius Russian scientist plan to turn a tract of the Siberian tundra into Pleistocene Park, populating the permafrost with ancient herbivores as a hedge against an environmental ticking time bomb. More than a story of genetics, this is a thriller illuminating the race against global warming, the incredible power of modern technology, the brave fossil hunters who battle polar bears and extreme weather conditions, and the ethical quandary of cloning extinct animals. Can we right the wrongs of our ancestors who hunted the woolly mammoth to extinction--and at what cost?

Where's Waldo in Winchester

Where’s Waldo? In Winchester, of course! The iconic children’s book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting thirty local businesses throughout our community this July. Find Waldo Local is a great summer activity and a wonderful way to support local businesses and the Shop Local movement in our community, including these partners: Studio on the Common, Recess, Kids Foot Stop, Home, and Fells Hardware. Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Winchester!” passport, which contains the names of all the participating sites, and get their passport stamped or signed for each Waldo they spot. Collecting store signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand-prize drawing on July 31, with the top prize being a six-volume deluxe set of Waldo books. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Where’s Waldo? books. Martin Handford’s collections of crowd scenes swept the world in the late eighties, and since then have held a cherished spot on bookstore shelves the world over. There are now over 67 million Waldo books in print worldwide, and they’ve been translated into over thirty languages. An entire generation has grown up searching for Waldo and his cast of wandering companions. To celebrate such a special milestone, Waldo’s friend Wenda will also be hiding in Book Ends here in Winchester! Participants of Find Waldo Local will have double fun searching for both Waldo and Wenda all month long. Once again, in celebration of Waldo’s longevity and popularity, his American publisher, Candlewick Press, is teaming up with the American Booksellers Association and two hundred and fifty independent bookstores across the country for some hide-and-seek fun to encourage communities to patronize their local businesses. There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts for the entire month of July. For more information about hunting for Waldo in Winchester, call Book Ends at 781-721-5933. Michele McPhee Signing - Maximum Harm

Join us Saturday July 15th as we welcome Michele McPhee to discuss and sign her newest book, Mazimum Harm. In Maximum Harm, veteran investigative journalist Michele R. McPhee unravels the complex story behind the public facts of the Boston Marathon bombing. She examines the bombers’ roots in Dagestan and Chechnya, their struggle to assimilate in America, and their growing hatred of the United States—a deepening antagonism that would prompt federal prosecutors to dub Dzhokhar Tsarnaev “America's worst nightmare.” Maximum Harm is also a compelling examination of the Tsarnaev brothers’ movements in the days leading up to the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013, the subsequent investigation, the Tsarnaevs’ murder of MIT police officer Sean Collier, the high-speed chase and shootout that killed Tamerlan, and the manhunt in which the authorities finally captured Dzhokhar, hiding in a Watertown backyard. McPhee untangles the many threads of circumstance, coincidence, collusion, motive, and opportunity that resulted in the deadliest attack on the city of Boston to date. MICHELE R. MCPHEE has been nominated for three Emmy awards for investigative journalism and works as a Boston-based producer for the Brian Ross Investigative Unit at ABC News. She is the host of a daily radio talk show on Boston’s WMEX. McPhee earned many journalism awards as the police bureau chief at the New York Daily News and wrote an award-winning column at the Boston Herald. She has written for New York, Newsweek, People, Boston, and other national and international magazines. She is the author of five true crime titles: A Date with Death, which became a Lifetime movie; A Professor’s Rage; When Evil Rules; Heartless; and A Mob Story, currently in development as a feature film.
