75 years ago on this date, May 15, 1942, the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) is established by law, giving women official military status. In May 1941, Massachusetts Representative Edith Nourse Rogers introduced legislation that allowed women to serve in noncombat positions in the Army. Thousands of women enlisted, and in 1943, "auxiliary" was dropped from the name and the Corps became regular Army.

FUN FACT: Today is Bird Day! Bird Day is for the birds (literally), created to focus on conservation training and awareness. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Bird Day was first observed on May 4, 1984, and was started by Charles Almanzo Babcock, superintendent of schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania.
