In November, 1959, ground was broken for the new [parish] building program. On Trinity Sunday, June 12, 1960, Bishop John J. Russell dedicated the new building [our church].
Old Saint Matthew's was built in 1907 on Hardy Ave., Berkley, Virginia, on donated land. Until 1924, Saint Matthew's was Saint Mary's of Norfolk's mission chapel. Under Father Thomas C. Healey the parish had a vision of expanding the parish. Thirteen and a half acres in Sherry Park would be the future home of Saint Matthews, however, Father Thomas, suffering many health problems would not see come to fruition. He passed away May 15, 1958. In, 1959 Father Harris Findlay, with help from a fund raising campaign, made the dream of an expansion a reality.
