"Franciscan University is the instrument of renewal, empowering joyful disciples for worldwide mission"

—Fr. Sean Sheridan, TOR, President Franciscan University of Steubenville is an academically excellent, passionately Catholic institution of higher education located in Steubenville, Ohio. Franciscan University offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and eight graduate programs at our beautiful hilltop campus, as well as three fully online graduate programs. We are centered on the living in the love and truth of Christ, which permeates everything we do from the classroom, to research, to student life, to athletics, to missionary outreach. Our households system, launched in 1975, changes lives here on campus and brings our students to Christ, while our Steubenville Conferences, also beginning in 1975, evangelize tens of thousands of youth, young adults, and adults, every summer. Our life-changing study abroad program based in a renovated and restored 14th-century Carthusian monastery in Gaming, Austria has been recognized as one of the best in the entire country. Founded by the Franciscans Third Order Regular of the Province of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1946 as the College of Steubenville, Franciscan's student body includes students from all 50 U.S. states as well as at least a dozen other countries, and has become one of the most well-known, well-respected, faithfully Catholic institutions in the world.

In 1962, Leo Richard "Whitey" Schoff '66 planted this tree near the recently completed St. Francis Hall. Schoff was killed in Vietnam in 1967. 55 years later this tree flourishes near renovated St. Francis Hall, and Schoff's fiancée still has the College of Steubenville class ring he gave her before he left for the war. Faith and Reason, Beauty and Holiness

"As free and rational beings—that’s what it means to be beings created in the image and likeness of God—we have a calling to develop our minds—to embrace the best of both Athens and Jerusalem, philosophy and theology. When faced with secularist ideologies, we have the responsibility to show the world the harmony of faith and reason. When faced with modern relativism, we have the obligation to propose with the apostle Paul the more excellent way. And this only intensifies as you graduate today and enter a world that is simultaneously hungry for and resistant to your message. Franciscan has given you the tools to continue learning for a lifetime—and to share that knowledge with your neighbors, desperately in need of the truth, even when they don’t realize it." —Ryan T Anderson, PhD has posted the text of his address to our arts commencement ceremony this past Saturday. We will post the video of his address shorty. http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2017/05/19397/

Fifty years after Vietnam, memories of a former love and his college ring remain

“…but the greatest of these is love.” An alumna still has the college ring of her sweetheart, Leo Richard "Whitey" Schoff, USMC, KIA in Vietnam, 1967. And the tree he planted as a student worker here on campus in 1962 still grows next to St. Francis Hall. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/fifty-years-after-vietnam-memories-of-a-former-love-and-his-college-ring-remain/2017/05/15/86751a72-3653-11e7-b412-62beef8121f7_story.html
