South Lyon and Lyon Township Friends: We are in need of a design for the second phase of the Iraq & Afghanistan War Memorial at Lance Corporal Dominic Ciaramitaro Athletic Complex in SLHS. We are ready to have the top portion of the memorial crafted and installed. Please contact us if you know someone or are interested in completing this very important project.
Friends of the VFW and VFW members, I wanted to address an issue posed on social media regarding the Memorial Day ceremony. We were informed that there was an issue with the traditional use of balloons at the cemetery to pay tribute to the veterans who have passed away. There was a lot of emotion and misinformation about the issue. I will be meeting with the community member to discuss all sides of the issue in the coming week. The original social media post was intended to raise awareness of environmental issues surrounding the use of balloons. Our post was not contacted about any proposed changes nor was it involved in last year's discussions as posted on social media. The conversation was with another party and was not shared with our leadership team. Since we lead the organization efforts for Memorial day, concerns should be shared with the South Lyon VFW Post. As the new post commander, I will work with the community member to resolve this outside of social media. Any changes to the Memorial Day ceremony will be presented to members and voted on in accordance with the by-laws. We will keep Memorial Day as a day of reverence within our community. If you have any concerns, comments or other remarks, please send them to: commander@vfw1224.com as I will address them personally. John McMahon, LtCol USAF (retired) VFW Post 1224 Commander
