Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone! 2017 is shaping up to be a very exciting time in Downtown South Lyon and for economic development throughout the City. This past October we received a completely new, up to date, Market Analysis for South Lyon which focuses upon Retail and Restaurants. Prepared by Oakland County's Small Business Center, we are now already in discussions with 4 different upscale restaurant owners and a variety of retailers who want to open a Wine and Cheese Store, Art Gallery, Art Supply, Kitchen accessories, Gourmet Cooking, and Gifts. Interest continues to grow. Word is getting out that City Council recently approved the City's new Master Plan. Developers and individual business owners are calling to ask what property is available, including commercial, industrial, senior housing, residential condominium developments in and near downtown and more. Get ready DDA and Planning Commission, here they come! The footings for the new South Lyon Hotel are expected to go in during the first week of January. The owners are optimistic that the new South Lyon Hotel will be open by July 1st. Just down the street at 115/117 N. Lafayette will be a new retail store with Gifts, Home Furnishings and some Casual Women's apparel. Tentative opening date is February 14. Shortly after that, the entire building will soon have a new facade. When the current facade is removed in the next few weeks, we will see the 1922 building which is the south half of the building front. The north half was originally constructed as in-fill in the 1960's. The current facade covered those buildings in the 1980s. The new building owners are now planning and working with the city to restore the original 1922 building front and recreate an exciting Mid Century Modern circa 1960s facade for the north half of the building. Mid Century Modern is now fast becoming recognized as an important part of our continuing architectural history throughout the United States. How cool that we have one right here in Downtown South Lyon. Later, next spring and summer, over on E. Lake Street, there are 3 historic buildings now in the planning stage of front facade restoration. So stay tuned! Downtown South Lyon's history and sense of place will soon see major investment that respects our architectural history while, at the same time, accommodating exciting new businesses. Great stuff and more to come. Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Goodbye, old South Lyon Hotel!

The Hotel is coming down! I spoke to owners, staff and Builders the last 2 days and while it obviously is sad, they are all very much looking forward to the rebuild. They have some great things planned, the exterior will look the same but inside will be new and have a elevator! They are currently selvaging things to build new items in the new hotel. The bar they are planning will be built from the old bricks. I for one can't wait for the hotel to be back up and a wonderful feature again in our city.
