Sitka Fine Arts Camp
Description
Each summer more than 900 students attend Sitka Fine Arts Camp. In the last five years students have come from over 70 Alaskan Communities and from throughout the country. In addition to class work, students attend live evening performances and presentations by the talented camp faculty. For many of our rural students, this is their first exposure to professional artists.
Over the past two years, Sitka Fine Arts Camp has expanded their offerings to include a number of specialty camp sessions. For more information on our programs visit our website at www.fineartscamp.org

Musical Theater Camp 2019: Oklahoma!

Dear Friends of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, We thank you always for your strong support. We have had many questions about the demise of the Alaska State Council on the Arts and how it will impact us. You can read a letter I posted earlier here: http://web-extract.constantcontact.com/v1/social_annotation?permalink_uri=2Ns9DJR&image_url=https%3A%2F%2Ffiles.constantcontact.com%2Fc111de6c001%2F7ee9eb7f-368c-4685-a1c8-00b8908b018b.jpg&fbclid=IwAR3wI6MeqQfKxpchxt1apZ1hB8_1uzOIkybjUxrwpQ1mWF_7ghYInQ8ih3Q. We are saddened and outraged by the loss of this great program that has been essential across the entire state in supporting arts in the schools, supporting arts in rural communities, and supporting cultural arts. It is a tremendous loss. The Alaska State Council on the Arts received $2.7 million in state government funding. This was matched by $700,000 in federal funding and $1.5 million in private funding that will now be lost. We are embarrassed by our Governor who has made our great state the only state or US territory without an arts council. This summer has been especially busy for us. Along with running camps for almost 1000 students from all over Alaska, our staff has been busy writing and calling our legislators advocating for overturning the Governor's vetoes. Our organization will be losing around $130,000 in funding this year as a result of the Governor's lack of support for public education and the arts. This year, because of the Governor's cuts to education, the Sitka School District was no longer able to fund the operations of the Sitka Performing Arts Center, which is home for all of the School District's music and theater performances as well as many other community events. Our organization made the hard decision to continue operating this important facility at our cost. The Alaska State Council on the Arts was awarding us an annual grant of $18,000. We have lost this grant. We are also worried about the impact on partner organizations around the state who receive funding from the Arts Council to send children in their communities to SFAC. Our organization is not going away. In fact, in light of these cuts, the work of our organization is more important than ever. Losing this funding will be a tremendous challenge for us however we are more committed than ever to fight for the value of the arts in our state and to keep the camp alive for generations of Alaskan kids to come. Please help us meet this challenge. Sincerely, Roger Schmidt
