A story from Mandy: Give yourself time. Tonight something interesting happened. I was doing a move involving a backbend in dance, (probably not warm enough), and a deep familiar pain shot right into the spot where my original low back injury occurred—the injury from a car accident that lead me to quit dance as it was too painful and I lost motivation. I was 14. When I felt the twinge tonight, it literally brought me back to every time I felt pain from the injury, as it was the exact feeling for a brief second, which then triggered my body into that emotional & physical trauma I experienced. I was 14 again. —— My body sent a message to my brain that I wasn’t okay even though I was. I cried. I was afraid. —— That time wasn’t easy. I remember my friends having to carry me out of school because I bent over the wrong way and got stuck. Many times. Like most painful things, it was the best and the worst thing that happened. I was sad to leave behind the thing I love the most, but 10 years later I regained interest and strength to do it again and 7 years later I am still shining and loving it. And tonight my friend and dance teacher Julie Ardito was there to give me guidance, support, and remind me I am okay and did not re-injure it the same way as what I did probably just tweaked a nerve and caused inflammation. It’s amazing how the body remembers but I am definitely OK! I love this photo because it reminds me of one of my stronger moments within the first couple years of returning back to dance, and that I could learn to safely open my back up again, which allowed me to open up my heart and begin to face who I really am. Confront fear. And not let a person, injury, or barrier get in the way of what I love. I’ll always be a dancer. Regardless of ability. Move. Love yourself. Do what you love. ✌🏼💫🙏🏼 #dance #ballet #thisisyoga #liveyourtruth #selfcare #neverquit #story #truth

Do you get your cozy on? The Danes (some of the happiest people in the world) actually have a word for what has become an intrinsic part of their culture: HYGGE. What is #Hygge? <<- pronounced “Hoo-ga” ✨ the art of creating intimacy ✨ taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things ✨ cozy togetherness ✨ coziness of the soul ✨ COCOA BY CANDLELIGHT. ✨ My mom raised us to take time to relax, get “cozy” with good food and tea or hot chocolate, talk with each other, and get warm under a blanket or with soft socks. She of course would be the one to recommend this book. 😊 (Thanks Mom) @rereandmike ✔️ HYGGE can be most enjoyed with 1-4 people at best and promotes connection, sharing equal “air” time of talking, and prioritizes setting an environment where you can be yourself and calm. You can also do it alone. Yoga is a “yolking” or a coming together. Yes! The same thing. ✔️ Think of small logical ways you can shift your environment. Create mood lighting. Get out your favorite tea or cake. Put away your phone. Just like we create a sacred space entering our practice on or off the mat by maybe setting an intention, lighting a candle or incense, or chanting, this practice helps you tune in to your home and those around you. 💫 The book is written by the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute of Copenhagen. 💫 I highly recommend it. Denmark and other cultures are onto something. #hygge #theartofbeingcozy #yoga #connection #tunein

Happy Hump day! Here’s some asana for you. Peacock pose on a walk admiring a peacock statue in downtown Miami last month. Had some fun getting into this one. Don’t forget to play! #dirtyknees #peacockpose #yoga #armbalances #freedom #asana #colorful #innerchild Join me tomorrow for 9:30am Vinyasa at the Scranton location. I really enjoy teaching arm balances! Tips for arm balances: ✔️ Think #chaturanga arms. Create your shelf. You’re stronger when you maintain a structure where your triceps/elbows/arms can hug in to the body and activate your core. ✔️ Practice one element at a time. No one gets anything all at once ever. ✔️ Don’t forget to breathe. ✔️ Acknowledge any fears that are coming up (“I’m going to fall on my face!”) and approach those fears by reaching towards your limits. You won’t know where those limits are if you don’t test them out in different ways. Chances are you’re not pushing far enough forward on the fingertips or leading with the heart/chest. — except in this pose where my weight is in the wrists & elbows not the fingertips. ✔️ Cool down and let go after practicing arm balances. They are meant to create liberation and freedom. Going through that process should be no different. Find a calming pose whether it’s rag doll or child’s pose to take in what you have learned, leave behind any judgments and reflect on how you can take the lesson off the mat into your life. It definitely taught you something. Do you put too much pressure on yourself? Do you give up after trying once? Do you avoid challenges or different postures or feelings? Do you compare yourself to others? ✔️ Maybe snap a pic. Maybe not. It’s not about what it looks like. It’s about how it feels in your body. Yeah it may be cool but the novelty wears off quickly. This moment just meant a lot for me bc I love Peacocks and I hadn’t done the pose in a long time! Plus it struck up a conversation with a police officer passerby and offered our group some laughs after I face planted trying it for the 3rd time while trying to maintain it for the pic 😂😂😂

I think we come to Yoga for a lot of reasons, but one reason is to feel better and happy. I recently went to a World of Happiness Conference in Miami. Here’s what I learned. * It is our birthright to be happy. When we are born, we are happy. Our experiences, thoughts, filters, societal expectations, etc, are what add to mental chatter and make our original functional operating systems dysfunctional. (Like when we download apps to our phone and it screws it up). Yoga is only one way of peeling back the layers and clearing that out. * Happiness is defined by the individual, but typically involves mattering, feeling and adding value, being present, and BEING SEEN. * Do more of what makes you happy. Do less of what makes you unhappy. Simple as that. Without feeling guilty! * Write a list of all the things that make you happy. There should be a lot. You’ll find they end up being simple things, and some of which you are able to do EVERY DAY. Take action to make each day full of things that make you happy. * Acknowledge pain, negative emotion, etc, and then work to move forward in your life because the happiness of you and those around you depends on it. * You cannot truly be happy unless you want others to TRULY be happy. Be kind. Serve others. Truly listen. * For my happiness I added on a couple beach days where I was able to reflect on what I learned, and ended up drawing in the sand to have a little fun. It is not selfish to be happy. It is your right. And what makes you You and happy is different than the next person, so be okay if you aren’t a part of their happiness or they aren’t a part of yours. Remember— let go — peel back — do more of what makes you happy. If you like what you read I highly recommend Mo Gawdat’s work and his book ✨ Solve For Happy. ✨ He was a CEO for Google working on artificial intelligence and left his job to start this movement. ✔️ Go to www.onebillionhappy.org ✔️ to join the movement, spread good energy, happiness, and kindness, and ✔️tell 2 people who will tell 2 people about these life changing concepts. We need to make the world a better place. ♥️🙏🏼💫 * #onebillionhappy #happinessmovement #happy #beach #yoga
