We are often asked here at SLoSG "What is this Fractal Architecture you're always talking about?" Simply put, Fractal Architecture utilizes a more complex geometry than the standard 90 degree, straight-line Euclidean geometry. A good example is this cottage at the Trout Farm shown here. Curious, too? Check out our book 'Fractal Architecture' by Ken Haggard & Polly Cooper. You can also browse our website fractalarchitecture.com

SloSG is acting as consulting architects to SLO Guild Hall (formerly the SLO Grange Hall). Their facility consists of a large auditorium, dining hall, a commercial kitchen, and outdoor meeting facilities all located at 2880 S. Broad St in SLO. Our 1st project here was a 160’ long frieze for the auditorium, which depicts the natural and agricultural history of SLO county done in collaboration with Carol Paulson. Some examples are shown here. For a comprehensive & sequential look at Ag in our county, from indigenous times through the farmer’s market movement & designation of SLO City Farm, drop by and check out the frieze and visit the Guild Hall’s Farmer’s Market on Tuesday afternoons.

Studies of how building design can help avoid catastrophic climate change point out the importance of retrofitting our huge existing building stock. Therefore SLOSG has been pro bono consulting architects to the old Grange Hall, now known as the Guild Hall in SLO. This has allowed the Guild to become the third assembly building in the areas to be passively heated and cooled. The other two are new buildings, the Beth David Synagogue and The SLO Botanical Garden building both also designed by SLoSG. Three assembly buildings designed with this approach now give a critical mass to convenience the public that, due to our favorable microclimate, even high load assembly buildings can provide superior comfort with much less energy use and much less construction and operating cost than conventional systems.
