Dr. Alfred and Mrs. Ruth Beattie are well known to many here at Peninsula Regional Medical Center – especially since Mrs. Beattie has been a dedicated volunteer here for 30 years. Their generosity and heart for patients shows in many ways, including their donation of the piano in the Guerrieri lobby. On Wednesday, the Radiology team and members of our executive team and Foundation came out to thank the Beatties and unveil a plaque in honor of their donation of a blanket warmer and beautiful ceiling tiles – both items that bring comfort to patients as they come for diagnostic ultrasounds. Their donation also extends to the Peninsula Breast Center. The ceiling tiles are a beautiful way to give patients a way of feeling more at ease and less intimidated by a clinical setting. We can't thank them enough for their kindness and generosity!

Do you have a calling? Peninsula Regional's Pastoral Care Department may help you answer that call. They have several openings in a Spring 2018 class in Clinical Pastoral Education. The deadline to apply is Jan. 1, so don't delay! Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is clinical education for ministers, seminarians and lay pastoral leaders to develop pastoral care skills. Attention is given to meeting the spiritual needs of patients, families, staff and CPE members. This program is a minimum of 400 hours of supervised learning per unit of training. The Spring program unit is from January 19,2018 ending May 25, 2018. with 6 hours of seminar weekly on Fridays from 10-3. Three hundred clinical patient visitation hours are required. The educational approach used in CPE is described as “action-reflection-action.” Students provide pastoral care to patients, family members and staff, and then use their experiences for reflection and learning. Students participate in seminars that provide direct supervision, peer interaction, or accountability for one’s professional functioning. While seminary courses provide the basis for the theology of pastoral care, CPE provides the clinical component of theological education by emphasizing learning by doing. Peninsula Regional Medical Center is affiliated with Community Care Chaplains of Arizona, and is a satellite training center, under direction of Training Supervisor Rev. Geoff Tio, accredited by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, (CPSP). Classes are under the instruction of a Supervisor-in-Training. More information about Clinical Pastoral Education is available through the Pastoral Care Department at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, by calling 410-543-7202, or email joyce.lecates@peninsula.org. Applications are being taken now. Deadline for application is Jan. 1, 2018 Class size is limited to 6. Tuition for the full unit, 16-week class is $400 plus textbook fees. Application fee is $25 (non-refundable), which will be applied to tuition if accepted into the program.

Christmas on the Delmarva Peninsula is full of traditions. One of the favorites of everyone at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) is the annual visit by Judy Young of Salisbury. Judy spends the better part of the year creating handmade pillows and activity bags stuffed full of items to keep patients in Pediatrics both happy and busy. On Monday, Dec.11, for the 20th consecutive year, and Judy’s final year, the items she so patiently and expertly hand crafts in her Salisbury home were dropped off at PRMC. For two decades, kids visiting the PRMC Pediatric Unit and the Emergency Department have been treated to a handmade pillow, delicately crafted by Judy. She says her happiness comes in knowing that the kids will have a pillow call their own while they're being seen or recovering at the Medical Center. The best part is that Judy creates so many that the PRMC Pediatric staff always has pillows to hand out well into the next calendar year. Everyone at Peninsula Regional thanks Judy for this incredible and selfless tradition dating back to 1997 and wishes her well in whatever project she chooses to tackle next. In the photo, members or the PRMC Women’s and Children’s division join Judy Young and her son-in-law, Todd Jonischek, to celebrate Judy’s 20th and final year of handcrafting pillows for young patients in Pediatrics and the Emergency Department.
