Memorial Day Ceremony
Memorial Day is more than just a day off work, bbq's and the lake. It is a day we honor and remember those service men and women who laid down their lives to protect our freedoms. Please join us for a Ceremony of Remembrance on May 29, 2017. A solemn processional led by the St. Peter American Legion Color Guard and the Govenaires will begin near the Nicollet County Courthouse around 10:15am and slowly walk in the southbound lane of Hwy 169 to Minnesota Square Park. You may walk in the processional, if you wish (a police escort is provided for safety). The ceremony continues in the Minnesota Square Park Pavillion at 10:30am. The program includes: - The National Anthem - Invocation - Welcome by the Mayor - Musical Selections - Scholarship Recipient - Memorial Day Address - Reading of Honor Wall Names on the St. Peter Area Veterans Memorial - Placing of the Memorial Wreath - Firing Squad Salute - Silver Taps Back again this year, an area of the park will be filled with white crosses for each Minnesota service member that has made the ultimate sacrifice since the war on terror began in 2001. Following the ceremony in Minnesota Square Park, we invite you to the Mill Pond Boat Landing behind City Hall for an Honors ceremony for those lost or buried at sea.

Thanks to President Harry S. Truman, Armed Forces Day is a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of our military. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America. Although, originally, there were single day celebrations for each branch of the military, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force; this format changed on August 21, 1949 when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, the annual celebration now commemorates all branches of the military during one solitary day.
