Happy First Day of Spring! It won't be long before the gardens of the Hall will be lush, green and full of flowers.
#MatildaMonday Matilda was no stranger to politics. She donated to the Republican National Committee and attended the convention in 1928, one of the few selected women to do so. She and Alfred held fundraisers for World War II effort at The Hall, in addition to "doing their bit" with rationing and growing a Victory Garden. Richard Wilson recalled Matilda hosting a huge fundraiser for Chinese war relief, which then-Chinese First Lady Madame Chiang Kai-shek attended. The Wilsons also hosted a fundraiser for Wendell Willkie, who ran against Franklin D. Roosevelt. Perhaps Matilda's greatest political achievement was being appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Michigan in 1940. Not only was she the first woman to serve as Michigan's lieutenant governor, but was the first woman in the United States to serve in that role.
