MIKE Program is a Portland nonprofit agency that empowers youth to be health leaders through education, mentorship and community outreach. MIKE Program for Youth

MIKE Program’s mission is to prepare youth to be health leaders so they can meet their potential of vibrant good health. We team youth with near-aged caring adults as mentors in a comprehensive hands-on health science program. MIKE Program focuses on young people ages 14-21 with a strong focus on low-resource schools and communities.

MIKE Program for Mentors

MIKE Program offers a unique educational, professional and community outreach program for caring adults who want to improve health outcomes for youth. MIKE recruits, screens, trains and places mentors inside the classrooms with high school teens. MIKE mentors gain valuable experience and insight working directly with youth in a cooperative learning environment. Mentors are supported by MIKE staff as they develop skills in youth development. MIKE mentors foster healthy relationships as role models, guides and academic ambassadors.

MIKE Program for the Community

MIKE Program connects youth with their broader community through a Health Leadership Project (HLP). Youth driven, the HLP highlights a health message chosen by a mentor team (4-5 youth). The HLPs are as varied and unique as the youth, offering a genuine and thoughtful opportunity to engage others. Youth have chosen to present their projects at health fairs, local elementary and middle schools, and other venues. By supporting the teens’ choice of topic, presentation venue/audience and communication method, the youth gain leadership and advocacy skills.
