Stefania Buta '17, who graduated with a degree in psychology this past weekend, earned the President’s Recognition for Engaged Learning and Leadership Designation in Undergraduate Research. Buta spent the summer of 2016 conducting neurological studies on an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine at the College’s McDonald Building. As a junior, she served as treasurer of the Student Government Association, overseeing a budget of $1.4 million for SUNY Cortland's 70 student organizations.
Perseverance pays off for SUNY Cortland graduate
Michelle Candelo '17 was recently featured in a segment on WSTM. Candelo, who immigrated from Colombia at age 16, learned English, survived homelessness and became the first person in her family to graduate from college this weekend. Congratulations to Michelle and all of our recent graduates!
You know what's better than receiving a master's degree at Graduate Commencement? A marriage proposal to go along with it! Congratulations to Lindsey Minor '15, M.S.Ed '17 and Maurice Kearney '14 on their engagement, and all of the #Cortland17 graduates honored on Friday night.

#SUNYCortland seniors Mark Shelhamer and Kevin Murphy were commissioned as Second Lieutenants during an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps ceremony in Jacobus Lounge this afternoon. Twin Sisters Compare Brain Activity
#SUNYCortland seniors - and twin sisters - Alyssa and Alexis Cino have followed two separate paths during their four years on campus. Alexis Cino is a criminology major with her sights set on law school. Alyssa Cino studied psychology and one day hopes to help students in schools. Yet just before Commencement, Alyssa Cino used her expertise in the Psychology Department's electroencephalography (EEG) lab to compare brain activity with her twin sister.
Three decades later, Cortland man earns his college degree
Eric Prior arrived at #SUNYCortland as a freshman in 1986. After detours in the Army, community college, work in the healthcare field and starting a family, Prior will finally earn his degree during Saturday's Commencement. When his son, Jonathan Prior, enrolled at SUNY Cortland, Eric Prior decided he would go back to school himself. Prior will earn a bachelor's degree in sports studies. He has coached locally for Groton and Cortland school teams and hopes to someday coach at the college level. More on Prior's story from The Cortland Voice:
Immigrant Student Overcomes All Obstacles to Earn Degree - SUNY Cortland
#SUNYCortland senior Michelle Candelo can't wait to walk across the stage during Commencement on Saturday and share the moment with her family. This was not an easy journey. An immigrant from Colombia, Candelo has learned English, survived homelessness, graduated from high school, earned an associate's degree and helped her family stay strong as her father and brother have battled health scares — all in the last seven years. Thanks to the generosity of people in the SUNY Cortland community, Candelo's family will receive travel and lodging assistance to see her become the first in her family to graduate from college.
Latham gym staff, members save woman's life
Ryan Laughlin '15, a certified athletic trainer, helped save a life during an early-morning shift at ABC Sports and Fitness in Colonie this January. After a gym user had fallen while riding an elliptical machine, Laughlin called 911 and searched for a pulse. Laughlin's training and quick response, along with the help of other staff members and good Samaritans, helped the woman survive.

#SUNYCortland's tennis complex, which opened in 2015, was featured on the cover of the May 2017 edition of Tennis Industry magazine. The courts were named one of 12 distinguished outdoor tennis facilities in the U.S. by the American Sports Builders Association. SUNY Cortland's 16 state-of-the-art tennis courts are used by the College's women's intercollegiate team as well as intramurals, recreational sports programs and individual students, faculty, staff and members of the community.

Six Honored with SUNY Chancellor’s Awards
Six #SUNYCortland faculty and staff members will receive the prestigious Chancellor's Award for Excellence during the Undergraduate Commencement ceremonies on Sat., May 13. The honorees are Theresa M. Curtis, associate professor of biological sciences; Sherry Ellis, library clerk 3 in The Help Center, Memorial Library; Caroline K. Kaltefleiter, professor of communication studies; Lisi Krall, professor of economics; Lynn Couturier MacDonald, professor and chair of physical education and Carol A.
