The Movie Review by Andy McKinney Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Great, grand wonderful movie, one that I remarked on while leaving the darkened theater "This is the best movie ever made." "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" might not actually be the best movie ever made but my goodness, we had fun watching it. It even has a flaw that improves it. Sylvester Stallone has a small role as a bad guy. Such a famous face cannot vanish and appear to us to be anything except Stallone, which kind of jars us a little bit. Writer/director James Gunn also wrote the script for "Slither" and the 2004 version of "Dawn of the Dead". More importantly, he wrote and directed "Guardians of the Galaxy", a film that took in three quarters of a Billion Dollars. We liked that one from here to Hong Kong. Part of the charm of this movie, like its predecessor, comes from the music. In the movie house we sit in what we can rightly think of as a huge juke box. When the songs pour out from Star Lord's walkman, we have one of the best sound systems ever bringing every crystal clear note to our waiting ears. We have beautiful songs from George Harrison, ELO, Fleetwood Mac and Cat Stevens along with a dozen others blasting our happy ears. In one scene lovers dance their first dance to the romantic music of Sam Cooke, loud too. The word is out in Hollywood and actors have rushed to participate in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" even in tiny roles. We have the recurring stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana in the male and female leads. Wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista returns as Drax in a great comic role. Michael Rooker re-appears as Yondu, the blue baddie. Kurt Russell has a major role as Ego, a bizarre god like figure (remember this began as a comic book). Voice only actors Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel replay their roles as Rocket Raccoon and Groot, now Baby Groot, the sprout. Loads of new and famous actors staff even the smallest roles. Voice only roles come from Miley Cyrus (as a computer) and Seth Green (as Howard the Duck-yes, we have Howard the Duck make an appearance-how great is that?). But Rob Zombie and Ving Rhames also show up, not that we recognize them in their make up. Ditto for Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy). Stan Lee of course makes his cameo. Mantis, an important new character, is played by the beautiful and wonderfully named Pom Klementiff. That's not all folks, we also get David Hasselhoff and a series of Hasselhoff jokes that run right through the film. This totally deserved five star movie sequel runs for a good long two hours and 17 minutes. The PG-13 movie has no issues with language or naked people but plenty of light hearted movie violence. Made on a substantial $200 million budget the movie has brought in some $133 million in a few overseas venues already. The summer season has begun and begun big.

The Movie Review by Andy McKinney Gifted Frank (Chris Evans) has been raising his niece Mary since her mathematician mother's suicide. Mary and Frank have lived together for six and a half of Mary's seven years when-on the first day of first grade-Mary's teacher discovers the child's math genius. Now, following seven years of distance, grandma (Lindsay Duncan) works the legal system to remove Mary from Frank's care and from public school. She means to 'benefit' the brilliant little girl. Chris Evans, noted lately for his continual role in many films as "Captain America" changes gears completely in this small, emotionally fraught film. Eleven year old, cute as a bug, McKenna Grace plays little Mary. Mckenna Grace has accumulated 41 acting credits on TV and in the flickers. The camera and audiences love her. The chemistry between toothless little McKenna and Chris Evans as Uncle Frank makes the movie wonderful rather than pale and predicable. Mary often treats her uncle as a cat would a comfortable old recliner, she crawls all over him. Other notable actors inculde Jenny Slate as a school teacher and Lindsay Duncan, both familiar faces. Octavia Spencer grabbed the Golden Gizmo (the Oscar) for the 2011 movie "The Help". She is shockingly good here as the neighbor who also loves little Mary. Director Marc Webb made one of my all time favorite films, "500 Days of Summer" (2009), a tragic love story staring Zooey Daschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He made that one for $7.5 million. He had much larger budgets with "The Amazing Spiderman" and "The Amazing Spiderman 2". He makes one scene of love and joy where Mary, Frank and the neighbor lady go to a hospital to experience the joy of families greeting a new baby. I could feel the endorphin's pump in. Writer Tom Flynn has only three scripts to his credit, none famous. But he writes some great dialog for his actors, much better than I might have hoped. PG-13 rated "Gifted" runs for one hour and 41 minutes. Produced for a tiny by Hollywood standards $7 million it brought in $12 million in it's first week in the theaters. Four strong saw blades for the charming "Gifted".
