facebook.com💐WEDING FLOWERS 101💐 When planning a wedding, what comes first…the guest list 📝 or the budget💰? The most important thing for you to consider first is whether you’re going to plan your budget around your wedding or your wedding around your budget. The website www.Costofwedding.com is an excellent tool for estimating the cost of your wedding. Just answer a few questions and voilà an estimate of your wedding costs according to zip code. We answered a few questions and our wedding in the central Florida area could cost a total of $27,000 for 150 guests. This comes out to $180 per guest. We don’t want to shock you, but flowers 💐 are not cheap! The cost of a single rose can run anywhere from $3.00 to $7.00 per stem, depending on the type of rose and time of year. Flower costs spike in holiday months, from Thanksgiving through Mother’s Day, when demand is very high: 👉 Right after Christmas are college playoffs and the Rose Bowl Parade. Because of these two events, there is a severe shortage of roses. 👉 Right before Valentine’s Day! Rose growers don’t have a chance to recover from Christmas and football, when suddenly it’s Valentine’s Day and everyone wants red roses🌹! But added to the cost of the flower is shipping to get them to our shop (we don’t grow them in the back yard!), the care once they get here (you’d be surprised how much work flowers are), storing them and the cost of having a professional to style them into the arrangement you want. Even the style of the bouquet can affect the cost, as well as accents such as rhinestones, pearls or a special order ribbon! A bridal 🧖♀️ bouquet of mixed flowers could start at about $150. But your biggest expense could be either the Bridesmaids bouquets or centerpieces. One of our MOB’s (mother of the bride) was very surprised to discover that the bridesmaids’ bouquets were eating up almost the entire flower budget! 👉Translation: If you have a $1,000 flower budget, you can’t have 10 bridesmaids or there’s nothing left for the bride’s bouquet! Centerpieces are another area where brides are surprised at the cost. Those beautiful table decorations come at an average cost of $100 each. We did a wedding where the centerpieces were $300 each - and they had 20 tables! This means that with 8 people per table, the number of tables you can afford will help determine your final guest list. We know its difficult planning a flower budget for your wedding, when you don’t really know how much things cost. But that’s what we’re here for, to help you through the wedding flower maze. 💐WEDDING FLOWERS 101💐 Let's dive into a little bit of wedding history .... some of it you may find pretty gross... 😟 In ancient times, a wedding was a rite of passage to continue a dynasty, cement a trade alliance, or to simply create more hands to work on the family farm. There is some evidence that around 500 BC, brides carried sheaves of wheat for fertility. The stalks were often embellished with other grains or branches from a fruit or nut tree. In ancient Rome, brides wore flower garlands, believing that the flowers signified fidelity and hopes of fertility. During the middle ages, aromatic herbs and spices were used to ward off evil spirits, bad luck, ill health and (gasp!) mask the smell of body odor.🤭 Back in the 15th century brides smelled. According to Huffington Post, June was the most popular time of year for weddings because people took their annual baths in May. 😟They only got one and women were the last to take a dip. Queen Victoria (1819-1901) heaped her wedding ceremony with cut and blooming flowers, and wore a crown of orange blossoms -- a symbol of chastity -- in her hair, sparking a craze for bridal flower crowns. The Queen’s bouquet was a mass of scented symbols. One flower she carried was myrtle, a fragrant plant evoking the love goddesses, Aphrodite and Venus. The delicate, creamy-white blossoms are associated with beauty, fidelity, passion, and immortal, true love. Victoria started a tradition in that every royal bride since has carried a sprig of myrtle in her bouquet. And not just any myrtle, a sprig cut from the same plant given to Queen Victoria by her mother in law. Fascinating, isn't it? Our next post will be published on Thursday, August 29th.
