****IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE FLOOD COMMISSION**** In recent years, there has been an increase of dumping grass clippings, leaves, other yard waste and even tree stumps and limbs along the banks and into borough waterways. With warm weather approaching, it is important to remember that dumping vegetative waste down embankments into our river and streams is ILLEGAL. Not only is it illegal but it is detrimental to the environment and can cause flooding. Lawn clippings and yard waste dumped along waterways leads to erosion and increased silt and sediment deposits in the channel which increases flooding by filling in the floodplain. Although this material is biodegradable, that is the exact reason why it is detrimental to the river’s health. When the plant matter decomposes, it robs oxygen from the water and creates stagnant areas that ultimately promote mosquito larvae. Therefore, residents as well as professional landscapers are reminded that dumping along borough waterways is not only detrimental to the environment and will increase flooding – it is illegal according to borough ordinance (3-1.7 Littering in Parks and Bodies of Water Prohibited) and carries a minimum $250 and maximum $1,000 fine with the possibility of up to 90 days in jail.
