The Northborough Free Library was founded in 1868 but its book collection had no permanent home for nearly 30 years. Cyrus Gale, Jr., son of Captain Cyrus Gale, donated the land at 34 Main Street as well as $30,000 to construct a building to house the Library. The dedication of the library took place on June 12, 1895 at the Town Hall. Many local and state dignitaries attended, and the program included speeches and music. Rev. Edward Chute of the Congregational Church opened the ceremony with a prayer. Music followed, as well as a speech from Cyrus Gale, Jr. Then came other speeches from townspeople and local selectmen with music in between. At the end of the day, the attendees joined the speakers, selectmen, and benefactors in singing the song “America.” Please enjoy some scanned images of the program below, and let us know if you see any familiar names.
