Mariachi De Newberg Juvenil is a Mariachi Music class that meets at the Chehalem Cultural Center for junior-high aged children.  Mariachi De Newberg Juvenil was started by Jonathan Fost. Initially as a Migrant Program Summer School activity. Mr. Fost had a vision to bring the Mariachi program to more students and the community. After attending a mariachi conference for educators he began to write grants for instruments and materials for the program to grow and develop.

The Chehalem Cultural Center worked with Mr. Fost and the Newberg School District to provide a facility for the program. Now the program continues year round to give students the opportunity to learn how to play music through the study of mariachi.

The program is in it’s second year functioning as an after school program. It is being taught by Ben Rice who has led the program the last two years.

The program is absolutely free for students in the Newberg School District. The instruments, materials, teachers, and space is all funded through grants and donations. The instruments in the class are focused around traditional mariachi instruments. The Violin, Trumpet, Guitar, Guitarron, and vihuela. Students in the program can learn any and all of these instruments.

The class meets Monday through Thursdays 4-5:30pm in the music studio at the Chehalem Cultural Center.
Guitars meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-4:45pm
Violins meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-4:45pm

Trumpets meet Mondays through Thursdays from 4:50-5:20pm
There are practice rooms available for all instruments during these times so they can practice on days they’re not scheduled to have class.
