The historic Coleman Theatre Beautiful invites you to take a step back in time with a special program June 10 and 11 featuring Dennis James, the master of “The Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ. James’ annual Musica Curiosa program this year features the theme “This Is Ragtime.” The event is designed to authentically recreate the theatre-going experience of 1919. The first part of the program will feature classic Ragtime performances, while the second half will feature the 1919 silent film classic “True Heart Susie” starring the great Lillian Gish. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 10. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $10 for students and children. “This Is Ragtime” was inspired by the work and life of Joseph F. Lamb, the Ragtime era’s second-most famous composer. Lamb played piano at his local movie theatre in Montclair, New Jersey, providing live scoring accompaniments to silent films. The Ragtime tribute features solo piano and piano/organ duo performances of many famous classic Ragtime compositions interspersed with Ragtime era popular songs. On the keyboards will be Coleman House Organist Dennis James and popular Miami area pianist Terry Jordan. Professional Broadway performer Ron Young of Grove will provide the vocals and dancing. Young appeared in the original Broadway runs of “George M!” with Joel Grey and “Mame” with Angela Lansbury. “What a treat to have these talented individuals on the Coleman stage bringing us this special Ragtime program,” said Shannon Duhon, managing director of the Coleman Theatre. “Dennis James is a true master of ‘The Mighty Wurlitzer.’ When you add in the talents of Terry Jordan on piano and the amazingly talented Ron Young on vocals, you truly have something special.” Audiences will be entranced by the work of pioneering film director D.W. Griffith during the second half of the show with the presentation of his 1919 rural melodrama silent film “True Heart Susie” starring Gish, the number one leading actress of the silent film era. James has realized a new accompaniment film music scoring featuring historic Ragtime compositions by Lamb combined with period-published silent film era compositions that were played by film accompanists of the day. James was Gish’s personal touring accompanist for six years during the 1980s and will provide some personal anecdotes directly from the legendary screen actress’ career. “Silent films are part of a timeless art form of a bygone era that still carry their unique emotional power,” Duhon said. “These are the films that first made people fall in love with the movies, and we’re thrilled to be able to present them.” James is a New York-based performer who specializes in historic music revivals and scoring silent films. In his scorings, James recreates the past era’s sounds for the films precisely as movie-goers heard when first seeing these films now nearly 100 years ago. He carefully revives the historical styles and authentic music content, enabling modern movie-goers to again accept silent film as a fully vital preserved art form. The Coleman Theatre is a classic American motion picture palace that opened in 1929 at the tail end of the silent film era. The popular silent film series, featuring the theatre’s restored Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ, honors the theater’s long service as a downtown movie house that entertained generations of Miami residents and nowadays adding visitors from around the world. “These silent movies were intended to be shown in exactly this kind of grand historic theatre environment,” Duhon said. “When you combine this classic art form with live music and an enthusiastic audience, you’ve got great entertainment from the past that still has a lot of power to move people.” According to Duhon, this program is made possible in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council. The Oklahoma Arts Council is the official state agency for the support and development of the arts. The agency’s mission is to lead in the advancement of Oklahoma’s thriving arts industry. The Oklahoma Arts Council provides approximately 500 grants to almost 250 organizations in communities statewide each year, organizes professional development opportunities for the state’s arts and cultural industry and manages hundreds of works of art in the public spaces of the state Capitol. Riders In The Sky
‘America’s Favorite Cowboys’ Coming To The Coleman Theatre MIAMI, Okla. – “America’s Favorite Cowboys” are returning to the Coleman Theatre stage in March the only way they know how … “The Cowboy Way!” Riders In The Sky, who stand “hats and shoulders” above the rest of the purveyors of “comedy and western,” will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at the Coleman Theatre in downtown Miami, OK. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and $15 for students/children. “It is always a treat to have Riders In The Sky visit the Coleman Theatre,” said Shannon Duhon, managing director of the Coleman Theatre Beautiful. “For more than 30 years, they have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing the genre. “And while remaining true to the integrity of Western music, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding the genre with their own legendary wacky humor and way-out Western wit.” The cowboy charisma and comedic flair of the two-time Grammy-award winners has led to their induction into the Grand Ole Opry, the Western Music Association’s Hall of Fame, the Country Music Foundation’s Walkway of Stars and the Walk of Western Stars in Newhall, CA, near Melody Ranch Studios, along with Gene, Roy, John Wayne and other cowboy legends. Riders have also been the Western Music Association’s “Entertainers Of the Year” seven times and won “Traditional Group of the Year” and “Traditional Album of the Year” multiple times. The Academy of Western Artists has named them “Western Music Group of the Year” twice in five years and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has bestowed Riders with their Wrangler Award statuette three times. Billboard magazine’s Jim Bessman counts them as one of “the most historically significant acts in the history of American music.” According to Duhon, the Riders In The Sky program is made possible in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council. Footprints In The Dew: The Last Ten Tapes
There is a lot of buzz surrounding this documentary. Don't miss it!
Footprints In The Dew: The Last Ten Tapes
Oklahoma writer and columnist Dale R. Lewis, aka “the Original Buffalo Dale,” has completed a documentary on the unsolved murder of Oklahoma rancher E.C. Mullendore III and will be presenting it Saturday, Jan.14, at the Coleman Theatre. The film, "Footprints in the Dew: The Last Ten Tapes," is based on the extensive interviews Lewis conducted for his bestselling book "Footprints in the Dew: Chub Anderson and the Unsolved Mullendore Murder." The film will be screened at the historic Coleman Theatre at 7 p.m. Jan. 14. Tickets are $10 per person. According to Shannon Duhon, managing director of the Coleman Theatre, 50 percent of the ticket sales will be donated to the theatre. “'Footprints in the Dew: The Last Ten Tapes' has been shown to sellout crowds at venues throughout the region,” Duhon said. “We are very excited to have an opportunity to present this documentary at the Coleman Theatre. We also want to thank Mr. Lewis for donating half of the revenue from ticket sales to the Coleman. It is greatly appreciated.” Lewis’ book is about the life of Damon “Chub” Anderson and his role in the unsolved murder of Mullendore. On Sept. 26, 1970, Mullendore was killed in his home on the vast Cross Bell Ranch in Osage County. Although Anderson was in the house with him at the time, he was never charged with the murder. In the following years, both the murder and Anderson’s own life took on a mythic quality. "Footprints in the Dew" tells the story of what really happened on the night of the murder as well as the events of Anderson’s life before and afterwards. Anderson collaborated on the project until his death in 2010. Since its release in 2015, "Footprints in the Dew" has been consistently listed at No. 1 on The Oklahoman’s list of bestselling books in Oklahoma. Books will be available on the night of the screening and may also be ordered at www.originalbuffalodale.com.
