MASSACHUSETTS OPEN BURNING ADVISORY FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2017 In accordance with Massachusetts Air Pollution Regulations 310 CMR 7.07(3)(e) and 310 CMR 7.07(3)(g), the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is notifying local fire departments and Massachusetts Fire and Incident Support Unit (ISU) Response Districts that open burning permits are not to be issued on TUESDAY, January 17, 2017, in Fire Districts 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 because air pollution levels are elevated today and are expected to stay elevated for most of the day. The predicted prevailing weather conditions will not allow for effective smoke dispersal in the area, and open burning may cause or contribute to a condition of air pollution. Elevated levels of fine particulate have developed this morning and are expected to remain in central and western sections of the state today. This is associated with very light winds and an inversion where warm air has trapped colder air near the surface resulting in very limited mixing conditions. Skies will remain cloudy all day with mixed precipitation developing later in the day. Winds will continue to be light so mixing conditions are not expected to improve, especially in central and western sections. The early outlook for Wednesday is that skies should continue to be cloudy but fine particle levels are forecast to lower with a northeast wind that may be gusty as times. When weather conditions are not suitable, open burning can create smoke and odor nuisances as well as unhealthy conditions for nearby residents, particularly in neighborhoods where homes are close together.
