Our Mission at LNC is to provide nature education and encourage stewardship in an urban forest THE LOUISVILLE NATURE CENTER
Located in the center of Louisville and adjacent to the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, the Center features a large education facility and reference library.

The Nature Center and Preserve are located  on an upland and floodplain forest that has over 180 species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants. It is also home to over 150 species of resident and migratory birds and other animals. The grounds include a rain garden, two attractive water features and several other gardens that are home to butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial insects.

The unique urban forest includes two miles of hiking trails through the 41 acre Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve.  Picnic tables and a gazebo are conveniently located near the forest and gardens.  On a daily basis, adults and children enjoy outdoor activities, visits to the education facility and quiet moments in the bird blind.  Louisville Nature Center has the only bird blind in the city of Louisville where folks enjoy a close up view of the birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

Each year, several thousand students attend summer camps and year round educational nature programs that adhere to JCPS curriculum guidelines.  Teachers and students have the unique opportunity to utilize all their senses while experiencing the scientific, historic and aesthetic aspects of an urban forest. Many underserved students attend programs free of charge thanks to generous donations from Louisville Nature Center supporters.

The Nature Center is available for rent at reasonable rates year round.  The facility has kitchen accommodations, indoor and outdoor seating areas and space for up to one hundred guests.

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome at the Nature Center.  Gardening, greeting visitors, clean up, trail and bird blind maintenance and office help are needed from Monday through Saturday from 9am-4pm.

If you enjoy working with children and love nature, the Nature Center will train you to assist with education programs.  No experience is necessary.

Shrub update: So many people have reached out to help donate to cover the cost of the missing shrubs, or shared our page to help find them. We have recovered several shrubs, which actually were taken in a completely honest mistake. Our hope is that we can recover most of them. We are grateful for the support from you, our community. Nature will prevail! #shrubdate on #shrubgate

Please return our shrubs! About $400 worth of shrubs were taken from LNC today. These were donated by another small non-profit to be planted in our forest. The shrubs include black haw viburnum, dogwood, coral berry, sumac, false indigo, and button bush. We hope this was a mistake and not an intentional theft; however, our tree giveaway isn't until Saturday, and none of these species was part of the giveaway. We'd love to have them returned, no questions asked!
