Maumee River How barometric pressure and spring storms affect fishing Yesterday with the overcast day and popup storms around the area almost all anglers stayed home. Those that did head out caught a few species including a decent amount of white bass and white perch. James and Jeff from here at the bait shop went out fly fishing Bluegrass area and got some white bass. Another friend of mine went out along the towpath and got a few buckets of white bass just bouncing night crawlers off the bottom. We had a report of some good crappie being caught up near Grand Rapids. With theses storms and weather fronts swirling around the area the barometric pressure plays a big factor in triggering the bite. While that impending storm front might cause an angler without rain gear some discomfort, it can also trigger a hot bite. What many anglers know , but don't actually understand, is that it's the changes in barometric pressure associated with good and bad weather that turn the fish on and off . The Good Times: As a storm system approaches, a low-pressure warm front rides up over the top of a high-pressure cold front, causing condensation to take place in the form of clouds. During the time the skies are clouding up, and right on through to the end of the storm, there is a slow and steady drop in barometric pressure that increases as the main body of the storm system approaches.Once the main body of the storm hits and moves through the area, rain, winds and sometimes thunder and lightning form along the frontal line. The pressure continues to drop until it bottoms out as the storm runs its course. The fishing should be good this entire time, although lightning and heavy rains on the water's surface might spook fish. The Bad Times: As the inclement weather moves out, the cold front–a mass of heavier, denser, high-pressure air–begins to rush in behind the low-pressure system. The result is usually windy weather with clearing skies, dropping temperatures and a very sharp rise in barometric pressure. Large storms will bring in stronger, more powerful and sustained winds, along with a much steeper, higher rise in barometric pressure than smaller storm systems will. It's this clear, windy weather following rainy low-pressure systems that anglers dread, because it usually brings the fishing action to a standstill. As the Memorial day weekend approaches we are keeping an eye on the weather and it looks like its going to be cloudy with off and on chance of showers thru most of the weekend. -nothing severe- good fishing conditions as long as that east wind doesn't blow in to hard. Bluegrass Island and Buttonwood have been the best places the last few days . Use a variety of baits, lead head with twistertaill, nicght crawler off the boottom and a small crankbiat are good options today. Lake Erie Trolling K Can, Niagara and Locust are still the hot spots. B can and Crane Creek have all been mentioned as well. Look for stained water lines. Bandits, s, Bombers, Worm harnesses, and Spoons, are all pulling fish and most are running 2.5 or faster. Drifting Reports of fish around K Can and Locust, Crane Creek and Niagara have also been reported. Crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers or casting weight forwards seems to be the best bet. Crib reef, and Toussaint have been mentioned as well Perch: Reports have been slow to come in but what few we have gotten is A-Can and Niagara and now that A Can water is starting to clear up again so that bite should steadily improve. Be safe, good luck and have fun fishing

Congratulation to Mo Tawil this weeks winner with a 2.63 white bass caught at bluegrass</strong> The bite began to pick up again as the water dropped and the rains passed. in addition to white bass we saw a decent number of white perch and catfish caught using worms just off the bottom. As the weather warms we are also seeing an increase in the number of small mouth bass being caught. All areas are accessible today with bluegrass and buttonwood producing the most fish yesterday, those will probably be the best areas to try again. Recommended baits- Lead head with green chartreuse , white , or craw-fish colored twister tail. Black and gold chatterbait. White or green roostertails Weather Today Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. West wind 9 to 14 mph. Tonight Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. South wind around 8 mph. Maumee River LEVEL-581.5 TEMP- 63.0 degrees Barometer: 29.97 and steady Wading to Bluegrass Island is possible Clarity-4 inches That wind yesterday blew in a lot of water from the lake so the river rose steadily in our area yesterday. It will drop quickly today as the wind has eased up. Yesterday was a tough day of fishing, we saw a couple of buckets of white bass but not many. That severe temperature drop Friday had the bite drastically slowed down, even the bite in the creeks was very slow. Today as the weather has warmed(70s today) the action should pick back up . Keep changing the method and tactic til you find the one that triggers that strike . All access areas are fish-able today, crossing to bluegrass may be a bit sketchy as the current has picked up . The up coming week looks to be decent conditions after this line of storms passes. Weather Today Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. South wind 8 to 14 mph. Tonight Partly cloudy, with a low around 52. West wind around 10 mph. Monday Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. West wind 11 to 16 mph. Have Fun Be safe and Good Luck Fishing

Maumee River LEVEL-581.0 TEMP- 63.0 degrees Barometer: 30.15 and steady Wading to Bluegrass Island is possible Clarity-10 inches Well the ambient temperature and water temp has cooled off. The river is up just a few inches form yesterday. That 30 degree temperature drop yesterday slowed things down quite a bit so we didn't see as many fish as during mid week. Minnows haven't been working as well as the artificial baits. Chatter baits and lead heads with a twister tail have been much more productive. Today you will actually have to fish for the white bass , try different techniques and different locations. The faster water produced more white bass and a few walleye yesterday. We anticipate the same today with similar conditions. Jerome rd rapids , Butttonwood and Bluegrass will be the best areas to try. Sittin on the bank bobber fishing may not be the ticket today. Weather Today A slight chance of showers between 1pm and 3pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. Sunday Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2pm. High near 76. Southwest wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Have Fun Be safe and Good Luck Fishing

Maumee River LEVEL-580.5 TEMP- 65.0 degrees Barometer: 30.05 and steady Wading to Bluegrass Island is possible Clarity-10 inches There is a vast amount of white bass in the Maumee right now. Today the wind has died down so fishing conditions are very good. Water is at an optimal level and the temp is right for that white bass spawn. Yesterday I went out for 45 min after work and we caught 2 smallmouth, 2 sheephead, 2 white bass and a gar. We used a rooster tail, a lead jig head and a chatterbait. By changing the baits we were finding the presentation that triggered those bites. I put a picture in of the colors of twistwer tails that have been working the last few days. All access areas have been b producing fish. White street, Orleans , Ft Meigs, the Towpath, Bluegrass..all over. Tomorrow we will be accepting donations of white bass to donate for the homeless shelter beginning at 10 am. We are still short on fish cleaning volunteers, so if no one shows up to help us clean then the donation time will be cut short. The wekend out look is very good - even if we get some rain it will help more that hurt conditions. Weather Today Partly sunny, with a high near 62. North wind 8 to 13 mph becoming northeast in the afternoon. Saturday A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Have Fun Be safe and Good Luck Fishing
