New Books for Marine Library, June 1, 2016 Country Messenger Recently the Marine Community Library received a state-funded Minnesota History and Cultural Heritage Grant. The funds were originally given to the Minnesota Historical Society by the state of Minnesota and through the efforts of a local resident, Fitzie Heimdahl, ended up being farther distributed to Marine’s own library. The much-appreciated grant will help the library purchase books on Minnesota history, a topic which previously was underrepresented. Now there is an entire bookshelf dedicated solely to Minnesota which “covers all aspects and eras” from geography to cultural topics, according to Heimdahl. Marine Library volunteers were very excited and Heimdahl also stated that these books “filled a gap the library had.” This wonderful new collection is now available at the Marine Community Library.
Author Talk with Shawn Otto - Friday, June 10, 7pm Join award-winning writer Shawn Otto for a discussion of his new book, The War on Science, in which he investigates the reasons for why and how evidence-based politics are in decline and authoritarian politics are once again on the rise. Shawn offers some compelling solutions. “Otto makes a case that can't be refuted. Science is important to all of us, especially in a democracy… He uses the process of science to prove that we need science in order to remain free. Here's hoping all voters everywhere take him seriously—soon.” —Bill Nye, the Science Guy Free. Refreshments will be served. In the Marine Village Hall, 121 Judd Street, Marine on St Croix, MN.
